We arrived in Byron Bay after a short journey from Surfers Paradise. Over the course of the week we stayed here we had a great time. We started off in the Dive Centre Hostel where we had 1 free night so we decided to stay 2 nights. It was a quiet place and even though it was clean we decided we needed to be somewhere a little more lively!! So we checked into Aquarius Hostel which was a little more central and busier with a 8-man dorm and about 20 rooms. Byron Bay was at its peak season and were paying $32 a night each just for a dorm but it was so worth it the place was buzzing and had so many attractive sides to it that you couldn't help falling for it!!
The beach was absoultely beautiful and when the weather was nice which was most days everyone would have there boogie boards and surf boards and head out into the sea, people seemed oblivious to the fact that there had been several shark sightings in recent days and just carried on there business. One of the days our friends from our hostel (Aquairius) Dan, Gaz and Liam who had all graduated with Ria from Cardiff Uni (small world) and Jeremy from London decided to go to Tallow Beach which was on the other side cliffs and rent a few surfboards and see how we would go. We didn't realise how big the waves were and we got wiped out on regular occasions much to everyones amusement...the guys were a great laugh and it helped none of us were great surfers so knowone showed eachother up!! We went out on a couple of good nights with the guys and the Hotel Bar was by far the best place to go out in Byron they always had live music on and its a huge place with an outside bar and really chilled out much like the people of Byron Bay.
We also tried to take as much as the culture in as we could and everyday you could always find people practicing Yoga and body art was very popular and you could always find plenty of street performers to entertain you. They also had a free oudoor cinema screen we're they showed small length shows these ranged from Surfing and extreme sports to performing Yoga and playing native instruments. Most of the shops in Byron are art shops and they ban fast food outlets which was a nice change there are also brilliant walking trails we did from the town centre to the Lighthouse which was beautiful we walked along the cliffs there was 3 or 4 lovely beaches and we must have seen the biggest wild Lizard I have ever seen it was huge....and if your lucky which we wasn't you can see pods of Dolphins. The lighthouse was breathtaking you can see it from everywhere and when you finally get there its beautiful over looking the cliffs.
We had a brilliant week in Byron Bay and will hopefully go there again some day. Now we are heading off to Coffs Harbour which will hopefully be nice but will take hell of it a lot to top this beautiful place!!
