Central Park, the MET, Top of the Rock and The Empire State Building.
After working out which Metro Station to get on at - always think Uptown or Downtown and of course you have to think that Uptown will be on the right side of the street and Downtown on the left. Well we had an amusing incident where where had tagged on on the incorrect side of the platform. we had to get out of that platform, cross the street and enter the new platform on the correct side of the road - heading Uptown to the Central Park area. Well, when we got to the correct platform, of course our Metro Card wouldnt let us on as we hadnt tagged off. A very kind man on the opposite side of the barricade opened the emergency gates for us to enter. Immediately the siren sounded as we had "broken in" to the platform. This caused some concern, especialy when I asked him what we should do and he said "run"!
Anyway, we are there and nobody took any particular notice of us and we were soon on the train - our first Metro Ride. We got off about 3 stations on and began our walk through Central Park. It is a massive expanse of green, wooded areas, parks, lakes, playgrounds and trails. A magnificent area in the middle of NYC. We walked for hours before exiting at MOMA - The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. This is a huge example of the history of art in the United States and we certainly didnt do it justice by only being there for a few hours.
We continued walking south in Central Park and exited the park at 59th Street and 5th Avenue. We then headed to the Rockefeller Centre buidling for a wonderful view of Central Park to the North and The Empire State Building to the south.
Continuing our walk we then came to The Empire State Building and this time the weather was good and we again skipped most of the general queus and were soon on the top of this most iconic building. The sun was beginning to set and we had a great view of the lights of the city in all directions and across to New Jersey.
Today had been a very long day and accordng to Joanne's pedometer we had walked nearly 20 kilometres.
Tomorrow its Lady Liberty, the Twin Towers Memorial and maybe Brooklyn. It has been a wonderful first complete day. New York is impressive.
