After breakfast our guide arrived and we rode pushbikes through part of the town to a jetty where we caught a boat. We took the bikes on the boat and motored to a fishing village where we visited the home of a fisherman and he showed us how to weave nylon into a net. I failed miserably and the look on the fisherman's face said it all. ('This guy has ten thumbs' I could hear him thinking) (I was thinking-Let's see HIM solder in a 50 pin suface mount chip and see how cocky he is!) On to another boat where we met this chap's father who taught us how to throw a net into the water. This went a bit better and I did remember to not let go of the rope at the end! On to an area where we rode in some small round boats like a basket and woven out of coconut fronds. Then we rode to a farming village where we had a go at tilling the soil, adding seaweed and planting some crops. This was going well until I stepped back and trampled some of his other crops! Woops! On to the place for lunch and a neck and foot massage. Then to a cooking class. (are we getting tired yet?) We had to make our own lunch and I don't mean vegemite sandwiches! We had to grind up Tumeric with a mortor and pessel as well as various other herbs then coat a piece of salmon and wrap in banana leaves. Then we made a pancake with shrimp and pork. This was probably our most successful task. They also gave us some that they had 'prepared earlier' (perhaps made as a standby in case we also failed at cooking) After lunch we rode back to town. To say Lisa wasn't very confident on the pushbike would be an understatement. Lisa was too scared to go on the main road so we had to ride on the back roads which were narrow and we often had motor bikes passing and the odd Water Buffalo. At one point I had to stop as the guide had stopped to check on Lisa and I put my foot to the ground only to discover that there was a drop off on the side of the concrete and I fell into the vegetation on the side of the rice paddy. As Lisa was watching me she ran into the back of the guide's bike! The guide must have thought that these Aussies are completely useless! Made it back to the hotel somehow and a calming beer for us both!
