En route to Surfers we stopped at a zorbing place across from all the theme parks on the Gold Coast. Zorbing is where u go inside this huge plastic ball, get soaked in 60 litres of water and roll down a huge hill inside the ball. People lie on the floor acting as speed bumps so you go up in the air as your goin down the hill. I highly recommend it, it only cost $20 and it was so much fun. Well worth the money.
Surfers Paradise was a bit of a disappointment for us. It was a disaster from the word go as we arrived there at 4pm, it was a holiday weekend and there was nowhere for us to stay! Our bus driver didn't think to warn us that it was a long weekend (obviously we didn't know as the holidays in Oz are different from at home!) and because it was after 11am, he didn't have to book us anywhere (another complaint of Oz Experience - i'd been travelling for 5 weeks with them and they never told me this until that moment!) so we struggled to find accommodation. Luckily my mate had vouchers for the Marriot that she got through her work so we spent 2 days in absolute luxury. Not having to worry about backpackers stealing our stuff and having double beds was heaven. We even got free use of the gym (which was a bit outdated but i at least i went once...), spa and pool (which were outside and seeing as it was raining, we didnt use them) and tennis courts which we also didn't use lol. We met some guys from Melbourne who were on a lad's weekend celebrating their team getting into the final of the AFL. They were hammered and caused havoc in our hotel. I'm sure the manager was not pleased!
We attemtped to go to the beach one day but had to leave after an hour as the wind was making it impossible to sunbathe and then shortly after us leaving, it started to rain! We took shelter in this lovely restaurant on Cavill Avenue and were entertained by some Elvis impersonator strutting his stuff on the street with his music blaring out of the speakers. Was absolutely hilarious to watch as the guy did not look anything like Elvis and i'm positive he was miming. However, credit to him if he was singing cos it was really good, it was just his dance moves that were questionable! Next to the impersonator at the entrance to the shopping mall is this amazing Chinese massage place. Mmmmmm i had a brilliant massage for $30. I didn't feel the benefit right away but the next day i noticed i wasn't as tense and my shoulders didn't hurt anymore. What a treat that was!
On our last night we went to the Hard Rock Cafe which was brilliant. I wasn't all that hungry tho so just had 2 starters but my mate highly recommended the fajitas so i'll have them the next time i go. I shared a dessert with my other mate and had to get my picture taken with it as i did the same when i went to the Hard Rock in Amsterdam so it's becoming a theme now :-D The staff were so friendly and it was really busy that night. We were people watching while we were there and there was this couple next to us who looked as though they were on a first date and it didn't look as if it was goin well at all. We had fun analysing them hehe. They guy looked like Billy Zane, i couldn't help but stare at him cos it could so easily have been him except obviously he's loved up with Kelly Brook. Anyway, after the Hard Rock we went back to the hotel and lay in bed watching tv. It was such a rarity to have a tv in our room and be able to just lie there watching it. It was a whole psychic night so we all found a new addiction in the Most Haunted. Fun fun.
We had more trouble trying to leave Surfers as the bus we were supposed to be going on was cancelled and the company never thought to tell us so it was just lucky that we phoned them that morning! We had already paid a deposit on the next place we were staying so we had to leave that day so in the end we had to pay $20 for a shuttle down to Byron Bay. Bloody Oz Experience! Before that happened i was quite happy with their service etc but in 2 days i changed my mind! Idiots!
To sum up Surfers i would say that it looks like a nice place to spend a couple of days chilling out but i wouldn't go there looking for a party as there isn't much to do and no decent places to go at night. If the weather is nice, i'm sure it would be a lovely place to go but there is absolutely nothing to do if the weather is crap!
