Well i stayed a week in Brisbane and at first i was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited to be in a big city like home after having spent a month in all these wee tiny places but after a while it did get a bit boring because there was so much to do but we just didn't know where to start. Everyone was really friendly there tho. All the staff in the shops were happy to let you try things and give you samples which was a welcome change from home where everyone just wants to sell, sell, sell! There is a huge department store in Australia called Myer which is just amazing. We spent hours in the cosmetics section alone - oops!
We stayed at the Palace Backpackers right opposite Central Train Station. It was right in the centre of things so it was pretty good for food and partying. We visited the Botanical Gardens which was really nice although it was VERY hot and so we couldnt spend too much time there. Of course we had to ruin the cultured aspect of it by dong Charlie's Angels poses round all the statues...hehe. We also visited the art gallery at the Queensland University of Technology which was pretty cool, however i just don't understand art :S
I felt pretty safe wandering the streets of Brisvegas on my own at night which was good. Everyone who was drunk just wanted to be nice to you and give you a high five which makes a change from Glasgow where they want to chib you lol. We also took a walk down to Chinatown but most of the stuff was closed because it was a Sunday. However it looked like it would be a good place to visit when everything was opened. I visited a Chinese Herbalist while i was there and it was amazing how he could tell all this stuff about you by just feeling your palm. I was amazed yet a bit sceptical but the stuff he gave me seemed to work!
The foodcourts in Brisbane are amazing. There is such a wide choice of food for much cheapness and there are loads everywhere. Its much better than goin to a restaurant or cafe. I also got addicted to the fresh apple juices at Boost - yum!
I visited my mum's friend while i was in Brisbane which was pretty cool. It was good to get out of the hostels and into a real house! I highly recommend staying with family members or family friends when travelling even if you don't know them very well cos its a good break and you get a GREAT sleep! I loved stayin with Nancy. She looked after me and took me to see lots of things i never would have thought of doing. We went to the lookout at Mount Coot-ha which is where you can get a great view of the city. We also went to this retail outlet by the airport which was cheap and had loads of good shops, however i resisted spending too much money as i was saving myself for Sydney! Nancy was kind enough to invite some of my friends over for dinner one night which was really nice. We really enjoyed sitting round the table having a civilised conversation about the world instead of drunken conversations and arguments lol On one of the days Nancy took me round the city on the Citycat ferry which was pretty cool. Its well cheap and you can go anywhere in the city. We went over to New Farm which is where she used to live. There is an amazing swing park there where all the kids have birthday parties. Its so cool that you can do that there, saves a fortune and there are outdoor barbecues everywhere! Outdoor living is just so easy here whereas at home you can't do anything for the rain! Anyway, we then went off to Bretts Wharf and had a really nice lunch at some posh cafe. I was SO full after that and its not like me to be full! I was still full at night when her and her husband took me to a Chinese restaurant at night for a banquet. In the end i had to get most of it put in containers to take home! I must have been feeling ill or something cos usually i can eat for Scotland! It was a sad moment to leave Nancy and her lovely house. She took good care of me and was very generous - loved it!
It wasn't all sophistication and sight seeing while in Brisbane, we did manage to get completely hammered one night in the Down Under Bar which is underneath the hostel i stayed in. Just as well cos there is no way i could have found my way home! Cheap wine, shots and cocktails before 10pm and drinking in our room was probably the reason i can't remember half the night but hey im sure it was good! It was the last night our whole group from the Oz bus was together and so we had to go out with a bang! There was much gossip and people coupling off which made it interesting. It was even more interesting for me the next day when i had to get it all explained to me again as i couldn't remember. I had a look at my phone the next morning and could not remember sending some of my texts OOPS! Me no think il be getting that drunk again anytime soon as my hangover the next day was a killer.
To sum up, we never did all that much in Brisbane but to be honest we didn't really know what to do! There are lots of museums and stuff to see if your into that kind of thing and there are lots of shopping malls etc which is pretty cool. I enjoyed my time in Brizzy tho and i would recommend it. Its a good place to work because there are plenty of jobs available and its cheaper to live than Sydney. I reckon if i were to emigrate, i'd perhaps give Brisbane a go.
