Hello guys! Today is Saturday and i have a few days worth of stuff to put on so i'll try to condense it all as much as possible so that i don't bore u all :D
I had a teary farewell at the airport in Glasgow. It was actually rather emotional but i think i managed to hold it together quite well. The mother and the wife were also upset which made me more upset! My bro was doin his best to be a man lol Flights were not bad, bit cramped on the Singapore flight and the turbulence was also quite bad on that flight but we were passing thru some rainstorms so its to be expected i suppose. I made it to Cairns in one piece and as soon as i arrived the sun was shining and all thoughts of flying disappeared.
Met a lovely Australian couple on the Singapore flight who had been travelling thru the UK. It always amazes me the amount of people who come from so far away to visit the likes of Scotland. It makes me ashamed that i haven't done it myself. Must do it!
On my flight from Singapore to Cairns (via Darwin i might add - the airport looks like a dive, we had to get off at Darwin, do security checks and get back on the exact same plane - whats the point in that?) there was an annoying Australian man in front of me who was talking s***e and doing it really loudly and an English woman who refused to switch her mobile off. It started ringing as we were about to land and i could have punched her! I don't want to die just cos she is an absolute tool! So anyway...i arrived in my hostel which is pretty nice. Its like a wee holiday resort with its own pool and barbecue bit but i dont trust myself trying to barbecue things so i think i'll give that a miss. The pool is rather nice tho. Dorms are ok but i cant get used to sharing with folk and having to be selfish cos i always try to not wake folk when they r sleeping but its gna get to the stage where i'll just need to put the light on and wake folk up! I suppose thats what u expect when ur sharing with folk eh?
So on Thursday i went on a skyrail cable car over the rainforest which was lovely. Its amazing to think that the rainforest has been there for millions of years. The views are just brilliant. It goes up pretty high too and one guy who was sharing my car was afraid of heights. I thought he was goin to have a nervous breakdown! I shared with two couples (pensioners i might add) who took me under their wing and let me stay with them the whole time i was there. They were Australian too and were having difficulty with my tendency to speak like a speed train so i had to slow it down slightly and i felt like a moron. I feel like im being patronising when i speak slowly but im gna have to get used to it for people to understand me! They had organised their trip with a company that lets them get everything for free so one of them let me use their food voucher because they weren't that hungry which was just so nice! And saved me $20! Result! One couple from Sydney even gave me their phone number so i can meet up with them when i get there which i might just do to be nice as they were so nice to me plus they can tell me where's good and that for when i first arrive. Maybe even get free lodgings - u just never know! Got back on the scenic railway but ended up sleeping most of the way cos the view was similar to that on the cable car except that u were in the rainforest and not over it so i didnt need to see it again. Got back to the train station to discover my lift was not there, found a map and tried to find my bearings back to the hostel. After walking for 40 mins one direction and then realising that i was goin in the wrong direction i started heading back the way i'd come (bearing in mind i was bursting for a pee at this point and some of u may be aware of my bladder problem so u can imagine the state of me!). I walked all the way back when i finally abandoned my pride and asked for directions. It turns out i was like 100 metres from my hostel in the first place so i was well raging! To top it all i'd just missed my free shuttle bus by like 10 mins and so had another 50 minute wait til the next one so i went and found a cafe which has free internet so its not all bad. Was shattered by the time i got back tho. Also met a girl from Manchester called Helen while waiting for the bus who i became friends with so i suppose it was a good thing i got so lost! The people i was sharing with at this point did a skydive over Mission Beach on Thursday and they bought the dvd. We watched that and its totally made me want to do it. The camera work is great as well so that's next on the list to do. Mum will be having kittens so i better not tell her about it til i actually do it! Ended up pure shattered on Thursday night so had another early night. Still not recovered from the jetlag!
Friday was the day i went white water rafting on the Barron river. U spend like 2 hours on it. No one told me what clothes to wear and me being me obviously didnt take the right stuff. It said on the leaflet to take a swimming costume which i did but i thought that u would wear normal clothes on top so i wore a top and linen trousers which were fine except that everyone else there was wearing just a swimming costume or shorts. So i looked like a right muppet. It also said to take a change of clothes which i did but what did i forget...? Underwear! So coming home afterwards was interesting to say the least! Aye so anyway, the rafting was well good but tiring! I didnt buy the pictures because u can't see them before u buy and i didnt want to take the risk of them being crap. So u'll just need to take my word for it that its good! There are crocodiles in that river about 2kms up from where i did it but i wasnt that worried about crocs. At the more peaceful bits of the river u can get out and swim about which i did. However i'm a s*** swimmer so was glad of the life jacket i was wearing. It was lovely tho, nice and warm and u were just surrounded by peaceful rainforest. It felt so surreal. I got bashed and bruised and have a swollen wrist to prove i did it but nothing hurts so its all good. Again it was all oldies on my rafting tour which amazed me cos i was shattered after it. Its definitely hard work so i dunno how they must have been feeling. They were all goin on how impressed they were with me coming here on my own and travelling about but really im so impressed with them for doing such crazy stuff when they r in their retirement. I think Aussie folk are just so different to British folk and they have such a love for all things crazy!
The people who moved into my dorm today (thankfully only for one night) were a couple who were so rude, didn't attempt to make conversation with u and shared a bed. If u want to share a bed, pay the money and get a double room ya bunch of selfish f***ers! I defo got the rage with them. However i never said anything as u all know i like to avoid confrontation hehe.
Also on Friday night i went out with Helen and her roommate Louise to an Irish bar which was nice. $9.50 for a Magners. Was shattered after only the one tho! Also met a guy from Prestwick so it was nice to hear a familiar accent as he is the first Scot i've met since i've been here. He is living here for a year but hoping to stay for another. Honestly see the amount of people i have met who have come over for a short time and ended up staying here for years...its just unreal! No one wants to go home. Now that i'm here, i like it but i can't imagine not going home. But i suppose its only my first week and it might happen at some point. I love hearing everyone's stories tho so i reckon i'll definitely have the travel bug by the time i'm due to fly home.
So today is Saturday and i'm heading down to the lagoon today to get a nice tan. My chest is slightly red just now so maybe i should be careful but knowing me i won't! The Cairns festival starts today so i'll probably see whats goin on with that. I've spent enough money in Cairns so far so need to start doing some free stuff! I've organised the next leg of my journey so next its Mission Beach where i'll be doing my skydive. So i'm looking forward to that.
Until next time folks...!
