After stopping in Quincy to do our last blog update we drove down south to Lake Tahoe, the first place in days we were actually going to stay for more than one night! After finding our way to our hotel Jacq checked in and asked the receptionist about things to do around the area. We were quite keen to do a wildlife tour or some such attraction but apparently, according to Mr Helpful behind the counter, there was no such thing but there was a fairly mangey looking resident squirel that we could take a look at if we wanted. The hotel was very nice (Jacq made the booking so one more tick for her, i think this competition is rigged! ).
We dumped our bags and headed out to find the one attraction that i really wanted to visit, the Lake Tahoe Gondala that took vistors up to the top of one of the surrounding mountains and offered panaromic views of the lake and the area beyond... surprise surprise the gondola was shut on a Monday! doh! We went to the pub instead! The pub turned out to be a great improvisation restaurant where you picked your own ingredients for dinner and the chef cooked them for you on a huge round grill plate complete with juggling spatulas, flippin bowls and enough chrisma to fill the many tipping jars strewn around the place!
Next day we decended into hell by having a macdonalds breakfast and Jacq discovered having bacon and plastic eggs in a scone is not really the ideal combination...
We then sailed forth on the Tahoe Queen, an old style missisipi steam boat, out into the lake and sailed around Emerald Bay, an inlet on the left side of the lake which holds a natural granite island complete with a mini-castle on the highest point... The promise of bears at the shoreline was indicated by the captain so it was zoom-lense-arama from Jacq "David Bailey" Jeffery from that point on. Alas, only bear shaped rocks appeared to be drinking at the shoreline today...
We were lucky enough to be party to a small orange haired woman (think umpa-lumpa) who spent the entire trip telling the lady next to us her life story in a very loud, very american accent... she also complained that the only part of the boat that was outside was also assigned for smoking (who would have thought) so it only increaed the hilarity when a guy appeared next to us smoking what looked like a tree stump... we named him Batman as he came complete with utility belt holding his mobile phone, leatherman penknife and a torch... we were not sure where he thought he was going to be dumped on this cruise but he came prepared for any eventuality... if anyone needed to look in a dark place... he was the man to call on...
Crossed the state line into Nevada and went to the Hard Rock cafe for a big feed and checked out the memorabilia... saw John Lennon's black suit jacket from the early Beatles days which was 'suit'ably impressive. (cue cymbal crash)
Woke up on Wednesday morning to discover it had been snowing all night, everything looked spectaular with the lake in the distance and the snow covered mountains... Jacq made herself "busy" while i dug the car out and off we went.
