We picked up the rental car from a "very nice man" in downtown San Fran who took a liking to me (must be my deodorant or the flight attendant had called in advance) and we decided to upgrade our compact car to a full size as it looked like it would be spinning around on its roof as soon as we joined a freeway like the tortoise in the Hare and Tortoise story. After a fairly scary drive out of san fran city (well done Jacq) we journeyed over the Golden Gate bridge and out into the unknown on the wrong side of the road (or the right hand side)! Being as organised as we are, we decided to drive around California without a road map and with Lonely Planets maps as our only guide so there were a few "discussions" about which exit we should take to get to the Napa Valley but eventually we took the correct one and off we went.
We hit Sonomo Valley first and visited the oldest vineyard in the region, 8 generations of the same family had owned the place and were very friendly. Next we went to Loxton which is an australian wine maker and we learnt the Syrah is the same as Shiraz, who said alcohol and education don't mix!
We stayed at a Best Western for the night which was ok and then travelled to the Napa Valley the next day checking out some more wineries... Met a nice couple from Ohio who gave us a few pointers on the infamous tipping and also asked us if we found american tourists as annoying as they did... we took the fifth on that one.
Visited a Winery/Deli and bought a huge picnic which we ate in the gardens in the sun. Yumo!
Driving up to Oroville now which was recommended by my Uncle... wish us luck! ;)
