Leaving San Luis Obispo and our hangovers behind... we headed to Hearst Castle... Not knowing too much about the place we felt adventurous and lonely planet said it was a must!!!!! and as it turns out they were right.... Basically Mr Hearst copied all the bits he liked from architecture he saw around the world, and built himself a massive castle.... The attention to detail is out of this world, every where you look there is something different to look at.... Highlights being indoor and outdoor pools that look like they are straight out of greek history.... some of the most amazing mosaics i have ever seen ( i almost got thrown off the tour by the cranky tour hag for my flash going off.... outside.... ) and massive gardens... The likes of Winny Churchill, Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin etc were all invited guests here... It really was awesome... plus as the only Australians (actually only international guests) on the tour we also got a round of applause (probably what saved me from the full wrath of the witch!)....
Only a few miles up the road was a colony of Elephant Seals.... they were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute.... and a touch smelly.... Took a few snaps and headed up the coast to drive Big Sur... It reminded me loads of the Great Ocean Road, curvy, mountains on one side.... sea on the other.... very romantic...We also planned exceptionally well and forgot to fill up with fuel before we left so had the joy of paying US$4.79 a gallon (usually $2.80-3.00 max!!!) ... Yep we are experts at this backpacking bizzo....
The big draw card for us for Monteray was the Monteray Aquarium and it did not disappoint..... The otters were my fav.... fancy being able to float on your back effortlessly and rest your lunch on your tummy!!!! sounds fab.... The hammerhead sharks and kelp forrest were also not bad..... Crowds didnt tip phil over the edge until right at the end, so all in all it was a very enjoyable way to spend the day....
To celebrate our trip and last place where we thought we might get a decent meal... we went out for a posh dinner at the Sardine Factory (posher than it sounds).... and ate our weight in seafood....
