Farewell Florence
It's our last day in Florence. One last trip to Pitti Palace (our 5th) and the Boboli Gardens. We had been laboring under the misconception that the Museo d'Argent was a "Silver" museum not a treasure museum. Glad now that we went to see it. We feel like we got to see everything we wanted to see and at a leisurely pace. It was a good feeling always knowing that we could take our time and even return many times if we felt like it.
The other day we found a restaurant for lunch that Colleen had recommended to us: Trattoria Cibreo. A cute little place near Santa Croce. I was having some trouble understanding the menu, but when I heard the waiter explain an item that meant "sausage," I jumped at it. 15 minutes later a plate arrived with what looked like a pile of raw sausage meat, wrapped in fat. It worried me. To allay my fears I decided to unwrap the sausage, but in doing so I discovered the fat had hair growing out of it. So that didn't make me feel better. Sitting next to the meat-thing, in stark contrast, was a small tart festooned with multi-colored candied fruits. I committed myself to eating the meat (not the fat (by the way, they had tried to warn me about the fat, but they kept calling it "fate" (and an ill fate it was) so I didn't understand) and saving the tart as a kind of reward. It all worked out fine as the candied fruit must also have been laced with a liqueur that for some reason felt like antiseptic. Nancy loved her dish.
We also got back to Lucca and managed to walk the wall that surrounds it (see photos). We almost missed it again. When the train arrived at the station, it only stayed for about 30 seconds--not long enough for us to get off. So on we went to Viareggio where we stayed for an hour until the next train back to Lucca.
Tomorrow we leave for 2 days in Cinque Terra. Very excited for the change of pace.
