Morning
I didn't sleep much last night as it was so hot, but today is a big hiking day. We've just come back from a really nice 2.5 hour hike at Emma Gorge, which I was really excited about going to because of the name! There was a beautiful waterfall at the end of the gorge which was about 50m high and we swam in the plunge pool at the bottom. It was the most beautiful gorge I've seen so far on this trip. We now have a bit of free time before lunch. I'm feeling pretty exhausted - probably a mix of heat, being on the go constantly, putting tents up and down everyday, and all on minimal sleep. But I can rest a bit in Darwin. Anyway must go and help prepare lunch.
Afternoon
We have just returned from an exhausting but adventurous hike in El Questro Gorge which took about 4 hours and was about 7kms return trip. The first bit was easy, walking along the rocks but the walk then became much more challenging. We had to get through water in one part, and so we needed to form a chain in the water so we could pass our bags from one end to the other without them getting wet. We also needed to physically help each other up some of the other parts. There was a small waterhole at the top with a waterfall. Luckily most of the walk was shaded but you could still feel the heat. I was so desperate to get in the water by the time we reached the end of the gorge that I would've happily jumped in fully clothed! It was the perfect refreshment. The walk back was hard because I was tired and my body didn't want to respond to what I wanted it do very quickly! No injuries or accidents though J. The gorge itself was really nice, being the narrowest of the gorges I've visited in the Kimberley region. It felt very jungle like and prehistoric - like a movie set from Jurassic park. I now am truly exhausted and ready for dinner, a shower, maybe a couple of drinks and then bed! We are on the road for a large part of the day tomorrow which I'm sure my body will be grateful for! I really have gained a sense over the past few days of how massive and untouched Australia's last frontier is (that is, the sheer wilderness of the Kimberley).
