Okki Abroad
A very large percent of Africans are religious. 2 hour church services on a Sunday is a ritual for almost everyone and shops are closed because of it. If you're in Kenya, a church service is something you need to attend just for experience. It is said to be very different and interactive. We attended one today along with the Imani orphanage children. It was indeed extremely different. We left for Nairobi CBD this morning. There are two Imani centres in this area, Imani A and Imani B, and they are about 10 minutes apart. We went to Imani B first and had a tour but there were no children around because they had already left for church. We left soon after so we would make the service on time. When we walked into the building, the loud music reached our ears and we were greeted by the sight of over 150 black people dancing and singing as loud as they could. We took a seat behind the Imani children and clapped along until the song was over. The service was really interactive! People went on stage and shared their stories about their journeys with God. Unfortunately for us it was all in Swahili. I just sat there and watched the kids in front of me annoy each other. The preacher started preaching and 2 hours later we were allowed to leave. Yes, 2 hours... The kids and the five of us (plus Hassan) were the only ones who left, the service was not even close to finished yet. We walked through Kayole (slum of Nairobi) to Imani A with the children. Kayole is not somewhere you want to be wandering around as a Mzungu without a local. The kids are disciplined and lovely to have around! Once at the building, we had a tour around the place and then had lunch. Imani A is where the little children from ages 0-5 stay. Imani B has the older kids. The little babies were asleep when we walked around and it was so cute! It's very unfortunate that they don't have families but they are very lucky to be in a home like Imani. The staff do a great job and Faith (who founded the orphanage) has done the children incredible favours. We didn't get to meet her because she is in Italy at the moment, with a child who is getting operated on so that he can walk. After lunch, the 1-3 year olds woke up and we sat and played with them for the rest of the afternoon. It was so fun, they're adorable! We helped the nurses dress them, feed them and then we played with them. They loved my hair and couldn't stop brushing it. I tried brushing a little girl's thick hair and it was so hard because their hair is so bushy and knotty. Mum and Dad met up with a staff member, Steve, who went to the Kilimanjaro with them when he was 16. He is 27 now and does a great deal for the orphanages. He went into Imani when he was 2 years old and now works there! We had a wonderful day with the children and I am thinking of volunteering at Imani when I am older because the environment is just amazing and the children are even more special! Tomorrow Anne, Dad and I are travelling (with a guide) to a dairy farm around Nairobi and also a coffee plantation! Anne has waited two weeks to visit a dairy around here to see how it operates and the day before she leaves we go! Great way to end a wonderful holiday for her!
