Okki Abroad
There is so much happiness in Kenya. So much joy, laughter and kindness! Whether you speak the same language or not, Africans find a way to make you smile. This morning a man approached us and spent about 10 minutes just rambling on in Swahili and we just nodded and smiled. It was so funny! He went on and on, without response on our behalf, until we said we had to go. He understood a bit of English and said that it was lovely to meet us. There are so many people here that take the time and make the effort to greet you! This morning we walked into Ngong and caught a bus to Karen. We were heading to the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden for lunch again. The Matatu was so cramped with people, Jette ended up sitting on my lap. There is no such thing as a personal bubble when it comes to public transport! The Coffee Garden is very popular for tourists and because of the great food, it brings you back to civilisation. This is exactly what you need after a week of travelling to areas where the food does not really satisfy you. At all. On the way back to the resort, we stopped at the markets in Karen. Everyone tries very, very hard to sell their stuff to you. A bit too hard at times. We have recorded some of Anne's excuses as to why she's not buying. Some include: I have an appointment, we are leaving, I'm coming back tomorrow or my money is gone. These are just a few. The bus trip back to Ngong was hilarious! At a certain stop, an African guy with dreadlocks hopped on. He was dancing to the music on his way down to his seat and was singing and laughing to himself. We thought he was a very happy chap. He sat down and we saw that he had a plastic bag with him and was eating stuff out of it. Then I saw what was in the bag. Leaves. It all made sense. He was so funny to watch! He was just sitting there laughing and chomping down the plants with a smile on his face. Anne was in front of him, just sitting there reading a newspaper, oblivious to everything going on. We got out in Ngong. Everywhere you walk, picki picki drivers are trying to catch your attention, so you will catch a ride back home with them. Because we are white, they try extra hard to pull us in. We walked past a group and one driver called out, 'Get a ride- I have free wifi!' I couldn't stop laughing! He knows how to catch a teenager's attention; it was so funny! We had to get some water from the supermarket, so we didn't end up going with them. There is a little kitten that lives at Oloolua, Olli, and he is so cute! We all love him! We bought him some cat food and he thought it was great. We had a lovely day and are very excited to see all the kids at the orphanage tomorrow! We are going to be with the first Imani orphanage for morning tea and church and the second one for lunch and the afternoon. I can already sense that we are going to love it!
