Okki Abroad
Monday night we set off on our adventure. The drive to Brisbane airport was quiet, all of us lost in thought and enthusiasm. We met Anne there and she was glowing with excitement. The first leg of our flight was 14 hours long to Abu Dhabi and left at 9:30pm, ensuring that most of the trip was spent asleep. It was over quickly but we could feel the effects when we stood up to get out of the plane. Once in Abu Dhabi we stopped over for 3 hours before catching a 5 hour flight to Nairobi. This trip felt very short and soon we were flying over the African surroundings. The landing was smooth and we couldn't believe we were actually in Kenya! The airport was fairly small but gave off a good, easygoing vibe. We were met at the exit by Andrew, an elderly man who was hired by the resort to come pick us up. The drive to the Ngong Hills was amazing. Andrew told us that the population of Nairobi is 4 million people. This explained why there were people everywhere! We drove past the biggest poverty area in the city. Endless pieces of tin stretching out for kilometres and few pieces of clothing hanging out on a few trees or lines of rope. It was truly horrifying and scary, the 'houses' are practically on top of each other. As we drove through and out of Nairobi, the people were amazing. Whether they are walking or driving or carrying something; if you smile and wave, their faces light up. They have so little, yet are so, so happy! Our smiles were returned with even bigger ones and enthusiastic waves or sneaky winks. We passed Nairobi National Park and saw our first wild animal: an ostrich! We arrived at the resort and were surprised by the beautiful state of the grounds. Everything was done so neatly and even the pool was crystal clear. The resort is very quiet because we are the only ones in it at the moment! We met the gardeners and workers and they are all super nice with a great sense of humour. All of us are exhausted from the jet lag but can't wait for more!
