Ok so going to Colombo was a mistake. One night there and we have headed back to Mirissa as we have heard the sea is a bit calmer now and there is less chance of being sea sick.
So we checked into a lovely friendly little guesthouse called Waterview Guesthouse and the chap there - Loco - rang the whale boat and arranged for us to be ppicked up at 6:20 in the morning by tuk tuk to go to the harbour.
so with that all booked we wandered into the town to look for dinner. Down by the ocean there were many candle lit tables and we picked one playing Bob Marley all night.
We had a lovely supper with the sea lapping at our feet, watching the crabs popping up out of their holes and disappearing down them again. Bryan had freshly caught giant prawns cooked to order and Jody stuck to pasta tonight. A short walk later and we found another nice bar selling cocktails for £1 each. We were both a bit tired and knowing we faced an early start to see whales tomorrow, we vowed to come back and test the cocktail menu tomorrow night instead.
Bright and early the next morning we were up and offto the harbour. We boarded our boat with about 50 other people mainly Chinese. This should be fun.
The ride out to where the deep water is and where the whales spend their time, was fairly choppy but not so bad, so when people started throwing up all around us it was quite a surprise. Maybe all the time we have spent on the bumpy Sri Lankan busses has just prepared us well as neither of us were suffering.
When we hit the deep water area, a shout went up - someone had seen a water spout. Everyone cheered and the boat shot off to follow it. It spouted again and another cheer when up. And again. And then we got a glimpse of that magnificent tail as the whale dived deep into the ocean. A huge aaahhh went up from the crowds on the boat and a cheer as it disappeared. WOW!
A few minutes later another shout went up and off we went again. WOW!
We had a great few hours - not sure how many individual whales we saw but there were 6 sightings. Lots of cheering and shouting and screaming (especially from the Chinese ladies - we love them)
