These giant statues are famous in Sri Lanka and were something we had all been looking forward to.
Jody and Bryan were quite tired as at 4am Jody woke with a scream as she realised there was a giant cockroach in the bed with her!
Jagath picked us up from the guesthouse as arranged and we said a fond farewell to him as we hopped on the bus to Polonnarawa.
Becki and Josh made some new friends as a family travelling on the bus with us started sharing their fruit and sweets with them. In turn we shared the sweets Josh had brought out with him and it wasn't long before the two boys were playing games with us all on our smartphones :-)
They took the telephone number of the family with an open invitation to go to their house if they had time and we all waved cheerio to them as we arrived in Polonnarawa .
True to form there were tuk tuks waiting for us and another man said yes come and leave all your bags safely in my shop so you can go to the temples!
We love Asia!
So with Becki perched on the front seat with our driver Harvinder (a very cheery fellow who kept singing "one way ticket") and Josh, Jody and Bryan squashed in the back we set off on a very tight schedule to get our tickets - with Harvinder singing one way ticket all the way there!
The Temples were quite spread out across quite a large area and we were very glad we had the tuk tuk to take us around especially as we only has 2 hours to see everything before we had to get our train.
We whizzed around - Harvinder kept reassuring us not to worry he was watching the clock for us - Becki and Josh got to see their first snake charmer too.
Finally at the last temple is the sight we were all waiting to see - the giant Buddhas.
We have to say that although they really were quite beautiful, lying there peacefully, carved out of the rock, we were all a little underwhelmed as we were expecting there to be many more and much bigger.
Nether the less, we enjoyed them very much and Harvinder got us back to the shop to pick our back packs and cases up, and we arrived at the Train Station with time to spare. Just a 3 hour train ride now separates us from the beautiful beaches in Trincomalee
