This was a nice early start for us as we wanted to be at the rock before 8:30am to beat the crowds and the heat of the day.
Sigiriya is a sacred rock for Sri Lankan people and dates back many hundreds of years
Jagath was there to take us and the sight of the rock in person filled us with a sense of a formidable task ahead of us. It was HUGE!
We started on up and Jody was soon stopping for water and looking for distractions. The younger legs of Becki & Josh were managing the steps much more easily and Bryan was taking it slowly too.
At the half way point there was a cave very similar to the cave we saw yesterday which had some very old cave art in. It was quite beautiful.
Onwards and upwards and we marched on up to the top. It got very windy in parts as it was quite exposed but the monkeys that lived there kept us entertained to take our mind off the climb we still had to face.
Finally, after an hour of climbing, we reached the top and the views were lovely. 360 degrees of beautiful Sri Lanka stretched all around us.
There was also the ancient citadel for us to explore and the temple which was built on the top. In some ways it reminded Jody of Machu Picchu but it was much small and much older.
Another hour later and we were at the bottom and found a little shop that sold cold drinks - of which we downed many as the heat was beginning to soar by then!
We made our own way back to town and stopped for luck before heading off for our guesthouse and a long sleep as we were all exhausted!
