Went up to the Eagle's Nest today, Hitler's former teahouse. Built in 1937-38 at Martin Bormann's request for Hitler's 50th birthday, the teahouse sits high atop an 1800+ meter peak, which stands alone, allowing for the most incredible panorama. One can see Konigsee, the Austrian city of Salzburg, as well as the beautiful peaks that lie on all sides.
The road up is a feat of engineering. Completed in 13 months, the road climbs 600 meters over around 7 kilometers of roadway, with only one hairpin curve. Being single lane, only special buses are used to get people to and from the top, and the slope falls away on one side to plunge into the valley. Absolutely gorgeous views.
At the top, you walk through a tunnel of around 150 meters to the gold embossed elevator used to ferry visitors to the teahouse itself. At the top, a restaurant still functions and one is free to wander around and explore. The vista is unparalleled and is definitely one of the best parts of this trip. Amazing, and the weather was just as good.. 27 degrees and very sunny!
