Got up relatively early today, ate breakfast, and caught the Metro down to the Vatican. The Metro was crazy busy.. Didn't need to hold onto a rail, and that was after waiting for three trains!
Got to the Vatican, and made our way past the dozens of people trying to sell tours and umbrellas, with the sky giving the threat of rain. Got to St Peter's Square, which is absolutely massive.. Took a look around, then stood in line for forty five minutes to get to the Basilica. We went up to the cupola to view the city.. While it wasn't super impressive after Il Duomo in Florence, the interior of the Basilica more than made up for it. Very intricate and very pretty.
By the time we got out, it was pouring rain, meaning that our walk around the Vatican walls to the Musei Vaticai was a wet one. The Vatican Museum was very big, more like ten museums in one. Unfortunately, it was also very crowded. Highlights were viewing the Greco-Roman statue collections, and the Sistine Chapel, which is very beautiful.
Snagged some gelato when we got out (I got coffee and nutella flavored!) then headed back to the hostel to dry out and freshen up before dinner at Carlo and Marilyn's tonight.
