930. On the train today, with 3 different layovers throughout France and Italy. Enjoyed our second evening in Marseilles, going out for dinner with an Aussie couple from our hostel. I ordered escargot for the first time ever, followed by fresh salmon in lemon sauce with vegetables, with a piece of chocolate cake for dessert. Fantastic meal, and it was great to experience Marseilles' seafood... And for relatively cheap, since the entire meal came to only 14€! Af...

Sitting in a cafe in Marseilles, enjoying a cappuccino and drying out. We've been exploring the city this morning, but it's cloudy and the rain keeps coming down. The city is gray, and we know it's be a lot more attractive in good weather. Still, it has its charms. The Vieux Port is packed full of beautiful boats, while three forts overlook the entrance. Rainy in Marseilles this morning. Planning on heading to the fort guarding the port today, as well as the Chateau d'If.. If you don't know about the Chateau d'If, it's where Edmond Dantes was imprisoned in The Count of Monte Cristo, written by Victor Hugo. Last night, we hiked up to near the Notre Dame de Marsailles, which is a beautiful church on top of a hill overlooking the whole city and the Mediterranean. Made the trek to Marseilles today. During our stopover in Montpellier, learned that the football team there had captured the French national championship the night before, so a big parade and celebration was underway in town. We didn't have time to go check it out, but it was really awesome to see (on tv) the city celebrate its first national championship. Football's a religion over here.
