After a short drive we arrived in Blenheim stopped off at the I-site to use the pay phone to enquiry on some work. However the guy didn't seem all that convincing so we thought we should broaden our search by going to a local job centre. We signed up after purchasing our joint new Zealand mobile phone, for £10 each we couldn't complain. Using our charm and whit we managed to get a phone number off the lady who registered with us about a job she thought may be available starting the next day. We gave her a call and sure enough we were starting the next day all be it we impressed on a training day starting at 7am the next day... Ouch! We had a look round the hostels in Blenheim but we're not impressed at by any of them so decided to try a town called Picton which was about a 20 minute drive away. The first hostel we came to was sequoia lodge which was a sister hostel to Tasman bay in nelson and also offered free chocolate pudding and breakfast which was enough for us! Also the drive wasn't too bad and decided to stay there and drive to work in Blenheim. We got an early night in and woke around 5.30 the next morning to leave plenty of time to get there. It felt a little surreal when we arrived at the address given to us as it was just a house. However people soon arrived and we hopped on a mini bus to take us to the vineyard just out of town leaving Percy outside of someone's house. The job was easy enough itself we had to strip the vines out of the wire the had been growing around in the summer. Not exactly what we thought we would be doing when they said strippers but we thought we would have a go any way. We were told we would be getting paid per plant, around 10p each plant we did. It was taking us about two minutes each plant which after doing for about 5 hours wasn't the most fun we decided that it wasn't worth the hours we would have to put in. So at about 2 o'clock we decided enough was enough and took full use of the sunshine above us and amazing mountain views surrounding us. We were shortly joined by another English lad with the same thought pattern as us. We all chatted away in the sun for the last 3 hours of the day then hopped back on the mini bus back to Percy, saying farewell to Al the boss with an optimistic see you tomorrow, then headed back to tranquil sequoia lodge to relax after our first effort of work.
