So it's been a while. I have a lot to catch up on I think.
We went on an advenutre this weekend. to a castle on an island amongst the Thousand Islands. In the Thousand Islands there are 1, 864 islands ranging in a variety of sizes. To be considered an island in this location, the land needs to stay above water for over a 365 day period and support the life of a tree.
You cannot visit all of the islands as some of them are privately owned.
On our journey, we drove following the phone map and ended up over the bridge on an island inbetween Canada and USA after paying a toll to get there. Mind you, I was so hungover the drive was horrible. Every twist and turn I felt like I was going to hurl. It was not pretty. But the car was safe, because the feeling passed.
When we got to the island in the middle, and to the Yacht House of the Heart Island Boldt Castle. we were told we were in the wrong spot. Whoopie! And we had to drive half an hour back around to Alexandra Bay. Didn't end up having to pay for the toll in the first place.
So we drove back around.
And when we got there it was so beautiful. We bought our tickets for the boat ride and at one point thought we were going to die because the water was so rough.
But we survived. Clearly, or else I wouldn't be writing this.
We entered the castle and spent a good two hours wondering around the 126 room castle with tunnels, a bowling alley, a ballroom and swimming pool. The place was incredible. It had a children's playhouse, a gazebo, it's own yacht house and many more features.
The castle was built by George C. Boldt for his wife, Louise. However, the construction of the castle was ceased because tragedy struck with the death of George's wife. He never stepped foot on the island again and the castle was left untouched until years later when a plan was put in place for it's restoration.
Boldt was the proprieter of the world-famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. This hotel was burnt down not long after George's death and was later replaced with the Empire State Building.
Learning all about this on our little trip was so fascinating. The house was incredible, so large, so grand and so warm from a windy day outside.
