A Semester Overseas
Today I had my first class for my teaching internship. It was a really fun class and I'm excited to start going to the schools and interacting with the kids. Today our teacher basically just told us some history of the Austrian public schools and what the teaching system is like. One thing I found interesting was that every Austrian child starts speaking another foreign language at the age of 6 in public schools. No wonder everyone can speak english here!
Another funny thing was that competition between students is not as tough as it is in the US. Cheating in Austria is considered "cooperation." And if the students refuse to help their friends cheat, they become ostracized by the rest of their friends. Ofcourse if teachers find their students cheating, they are punished- but it is more accepted by the students here.
After class ended, Becky and I ran to the Staatsoper (the Vienna State Opera) to stand in line for standing room tickets to see "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (The Barber of Seville). We had to wait in line for 2 hours but it was worth it because we could see the stage very well and it only cost 3.50 Euros. (see photos)
For dinner we went to the Cafe Bistro, a restaurant next to the Opera House. I had crepes with mixed cheese, jam, and apple slices with a Melange coffee. Es schmeckt mir sehr gut! (see photos)
