A Semester Overseas
Tonight I went to see "Die Zauberflote" (The Magic Flute) by Mozart at the opera. It was really good. Last night I went to see The Magic Flute performed at a marionette theater and they performed the whole opera with marionettes which was fun to watch. So I saw The Magic Flute two nights in a row! I've been getting busier since classes started last week but my classes are really interesting so it doesn't feel like work. I'm taking Austrian Art & Architecture, Psychopathology, German, my Teaching Internship, and the Music Performance Class. I still have to update from my trip to Budapest so here is what I did!
Thursday, Sept. 21st: We left at 8:30am on the bus from Krakow to Budapest. We passed through Slovakia and on for lunch we stopped to eat in the Slovakian mountains. At 6:30pm we arrived at our hotel- the Star Hotel- in Pest. We had the night free but most of us stayed in and went to sleep early because we were so tired.
Friday, Sept. 22nd: We leave for Sightseeing at 9:30am and see their liberation statue. We passed by "Margaret Island" which is an island in the middle of the Danube between Buda and Pest. It used to be called the "Island of Bunnies" and now it is a recreational park. I wanted to visit Margaret Island but unfortunately I didn't have enough time. Before lunch time we went to go see some roman ruins. After lunch, they dropped us off at the turkish baths. When we got there, the cashier forgot to give me a receipt when I purchased my ticket and the bath wouldn't let me in without a receipt. No one spoke english and they kept turning me away even though I had a ticket and I was showing it to them. I finally went to the customer service desk and she started yelling at the cashiers for not giving me a receipt. Needless to say, it turned into a whole big mess and everyone began fighting. I did finally get into the baths which was good because I needed to relax after all the trouble I went through to get in.
Saturday, Sept. 23rd: We visited Hero's Square in the morning. We were suppose to go to the Fine Arts Museum but a demonstration was planned to be held on Hero's Square in front of the museum and the museum was closed. So instead, our guide took us to the communist park which is a park at the far end of the city where all the communist statues were put. Then we took a tour of castle hill before dinner. For dinner, we went to a Brewery where I had a delicious dinner of grilled goat cheese!
On sunday we left at 9:30am to head back to Vienna. Budapest was nice and we had no problems there even though there were protests going on in front of the parliament which we passed by once. But we were all so happy to get back to Vienna because it is- in our opinion- the most beautiful city.
