A holiday within a holiday! 4 days in Zanzibar. I'm not going to write a blog for each day.
The crossing took around 2 and a half hours by ferry lounging on bean bags in the sun.
Arrived in stone town where we will be spending the first night before heading to the north of the island.
Checked in at the hotel and Me, Martin, Lee, Rogan and Graham booked some motorbikes for 2 days.
Despite my lack of bike license we were assured this wouldn't be a problem.
Once bikes were hired, we headed into stone town for some food and watch the Manc derby in the fa cup.
9th Jan - collected bikes at 9am and headed to a local football field to see if we were capable of handling bikes, Lee struggled but seemed to get a bit of confidence so we set off.
20 mins into the drive, Lee fell off coming out of a junction and binned the bike. Several cuts and grazes, lee decided to call it a day probably a wise choice.
Back on the road we headed north, first police block we come across and the first fine!
Wouldn't of minded but I was the one with the fine, no bike license resulted in paying a fine (bribe) 10,000 shilling about 4 quid so wasn't going to break the bank, maybe the British police could learn a bit from African police?
Arrived at the hotel and checked in, quite a heavy night in the bar! Got to bed about 3.30am
Hopefully Tanzanian police don't have breath-a-lizers!!
10th Jan - another day on the bikes took a look at the east of the island some nice beaches for some great pictures posing on the bikes!
On the way back ran out of petrol, thanks to the kindness of Rogan and Martin I was left behind whilst they went for lunch! A very helpful group of locals fetched me some petrol and I was soon on my way again.
11th Jan - Bikes were needed back in stone town by 10am, we set off and stopped by the same police road block but this time, 2 different coppers on duty and very clever cops nothing slipped by them not even our fake permits! This time Martin picked up the hefty 10,000 fine (£4)
Arrived back at Ali Keys and left the bikes and headed back to the hotel for our last night on the island.
Highlights of the Zanzibar - zanzibar pizza, chip omelettes, stone town, white beaches and clear blue sea and of course motorbikes.
