The night before leaving Tucson the sky was red and the weather reports were saying thunderstorms in the morning. I thought that sounded like the opposite of the old saying and set my hopes on the old adage instead of technology. I had some driving to do in New Mexico.
Waiting for the train in the Amtrak station feels a bit like I am in a child's story book the conductors are waiving everyone on to the train and shouting all aboard as the whistle blows. The station is old and filled with the memories of the past including an old machine that was used to control the trains. I watched Tucson fade away past the old buildings amongst the new. Closed businesses and new chain stores and the desert.
You can tell the train people, let's call them trainees, from the newbies, like me, immediately. The trainees are fully prepared with blankets, coolers, slippers. They know where everything is, how the seats work, how to handle the luggage best. Olga was seated across the aisle from me and makes the trip from Tucson to El Paso quite often. Of course I have how graduated from newbie to Jr. Trainee thanks to the advice and guidance Olga provided.
Lunch in the diner car was great fun. I lunched with Olga of course, and two women from New Zealand. Great fun, three new friends, a good lunch, and great conversation. Learned a lot about New Zealand. Maybe my next trip. They have cool train rides also.
