We passed a ghost town, Steins, in New Mexico in an area referred to as Doubtful Canyon. The Southern Pacific was crushing gravel for 300 miles of rail bed. The Chinese workers who did the work were not allowed to live in Steins but had to stay out by the quarry itself. There is a cemetery to the south of I10. It is said that the ground is so hard the graves had to be blasted out of the earth. From the train you can see the old buildings and even make out the general store.
