After we left the sunshine coast we headed inland towards the volcanic peaks of the glass house mountains. Before finding the camp site for the night we drove upto the lookout which had good views of the peaks throughout the region. They were quite bizarre looking as the rest of the area was so flat. For the rest of the afternoon we just relaxed at the camping grounds and enjoyed chicken, baked beans and canned potatoes!!
The following morning we got ready for a day out at the zoo... AUSTRALIA ZOO!! Its the world famous zoo which the legendary Steve Irwin set up. We arrived just after 9am, just after it had opened. One of the first creatures we came across was a komodo dragon, we were happy they had one of these as we hadn't been able to visit komodo island in Indonesia. Early on we saw a few creatures native to Australia like the tasmanian devil and the kookaburra. There we lots of aligators and crocodiles, we mean LOTS! Also there were loads of the adorable koalas, which we got to stroke and pat as they just chilled out in the trees. There were the worlds largest tortoises wandering around which were really cool. Around lunch time we went to the main attraction, this was at the crocoseum!! The Irwin family were there, Steves wife and their kids Robert and Bindi. Bindi is famous over here.. bindi this, bindi that... we felt sorry for the little lad robert. The show the irwins and the zoo handlers put on in the crocoseum was quite impressive... firstly they showed of some very large snakes, with one lady actually swimming with one in the water... crazy woman! After the snakes they brought out an array of birds which were really cool. Some very inteligent creatures they are, as one huge bird flew from its cage at the other side of the zoo to the stadium.
Then it was the big attraction.... CROCS!! They brought out a large crocodile called Monty, the zoo handler and Steve's wife showed us what the croc was capable of doing by enticing it with food. Then Bindi fed the croc from a raised platform above the water, where Monty had to jump out of the water to reach upto claim the food. We learned that crocs won't attack you on land, just don't go in or around their waters as you will be trouble!!
After the show we went outside for lunch what we had already prepared the night before.... we didn't want to pay the high prices in the zoo! We then visited the zoo hospital before returning back into the main zoo. Here there was a lovely koala called Stuart, he had unfortunately been hit by a car and brought to the hospital. Turns out Stuart had broken his spine, but the hospital staff had done some surgery and now he was sitting upright in a high chair with tree leaves around him, he looked sooo adorable.
Back into the main zoo, we saw lots more animals.... kangaroos (which we sat with and got pictures), cassowaries (glad we didn't meet any of these when we were up in the daintree rainforest!), elephants, rhinos and other regular zoo creatures. There was also time to watch a tiger show.
We would say that the zoo is quite good but maybe not as good as good as the aussies think it is... they don't even have any monkeys!! CRIKEY!
That evening we stayed at a terrible rest area just up the road from the zoo.
