After being told to move on from babinda we decided we would have a travelling day, our first thoughts were to stop at mission beach and do something crazy like a skydive but the weather wasn't all great, which would have been a waste of money. Feeling a little disapointed with the weather we headed towards townsville.. surpisingly in townsville the sun were shining. We decided to walk on the strand and around the botanical gardens. The gardens were really nice with a little section of birds to look at. With nothing much else to do in townsville when your watching the pennies we drove to home hill, which is where we stopped for the night. Home hill rest area was everything we needed and FREE!! Showers, toilets, cooking area and dining areaa.. not forgetting plugs so we could charge everything up. That night we made pasta carbonara, washed up.. made the bed and were probably asleep before 7.30pm. We even used the duvet for the first time as it got a little colder through the night.
The following morning we were up early and drove to Airlie beach which was where we were staying in order to visit the whitsunday islands. We stayed at a little camp site called base (basically for backpackers) which we got very cheap through having a spaceship. Once arriving at base we went out for a walk along the front and around the lagoon. With the weather being a bit hit and miss all day we decided against going in the lagoon. When on our walk it started chucking it down.. where were the nearest shelter?? Only blooming mc d's.. Now ever since we got to australia we've found out that Mc donalds do ice cream (soft cones) for 30c .. which is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying any other sort of ice cream for $5. So we both had a soft cone whilst waiting for the rain to stop. That afternoon we chilled out in sherbie.
Waking up bright and early for our whitsundays adventure to begin, we headed down to the base kitchen as we got free breakfast.. continental we were told... uhhhh sounds lovely! So expecting the works like ham, salami, cheese & crossiants etc we were rather excited .. haha only joking just bloody cereals and toast.. what were we thinking?? Although peter did love the rice crispies that snap, crackled and popped in his mouth.
After breakfast we got our things ready to go and wait for an ocean rafting bus to pick us up.. ocean rafting was the company we had booked our tour with. Our first stop on the tour was lookout.. we got off the boat and walked about 700m up to the lookout and our first words were 'WOW' the view of whitehaven beach was stunning... the most photographed beach in the world and we could see why. Absolutely amazing. The sand was so white next to the turtoise blue water sea. After the lookout we had dinner on the beach.. it was buffet style that was set out on the boat.. Peter was the first to jump in and grab what he wanted.. a massive plate full. Lucy had sat waiting on the beach so that the beach mat wouldn't blow away. When Peter came back with his food Lucy went and got her's.. Lucy kept watching Peter as there were a few seagulls about, which was funny. Once Peter had sat down with his food a big gust of wind came and WHOOPS pasta, rice, potato salad etc all over the beach mat. Seagulls sworming in and everything, absolutley hillirious. When Lucy returned pretending she hadn't seen anything she asked Peter what was wrong with his food his reply ' its all got F**king sand in' he wasn't a happy bunny. He'd lost everything his chicken drumstick, bread .. just everything haha!
Anyways after lunch we did a spot of snorkelling, yea it was fun but to be honest we weren't impressed with what we saw after snorkelling Mabul in Borneo. We then snorkelled at a second spot which was a little more interesting with bigger fish and more coral. Heading back turned out to be quite fun as the sea was getting quite rough, we were both sat at the front which was apparently the worst place to sit. Very bumpy and harsh on the bottom. About 10 minutes from the jetty our driver decided to have a bit of fun and do a couple of 360 degree turns in the water. That was a cracking end to a cracking day.
That night we had tea at the bar next to our campsite where we had a voucher for a meal and drink, turned out fairly cheap considering some of the prices they charge over here. Again another early night was in order ready for a big driving day ahead.
The following morning Lucy set off driving making her way down the east coast with the sun shining and music on, 500km didn't seem so bad. Finally stopping just south of Gladstone at another free rest area.
