After 6.5 weeks in New Zealand experiencing some of the best activities we've done on our trip, it was time for a few days chilling out and doing nothing in Fiji. We couldn't wait to get the sunshine back and finally wear some different clothes again.
BULA FIJI !!
The flight to Nadi, Fiji was only 3hr, which wasn't bad. We had nothing booked what so ever before we got there.. s*** it was mega busy with families going on holiday. Not to worry though once we landed, went through imigration and collected our bags we could go to the 'Awesome Adventures' desk and see what we could sort from there.
We hum'd and ahhh'd about which islands we wanted to go to and basically what we could afford ( a tad more expensive than we had thought.)
About 1.5hr's later we had everything booked.. 2 nights on South Sea Island.. 4 night on Barefoot (Daweqa Island.) But before we could start our island experience we had 1 night in Nadi at Bluewater lodge.
We arrived at Bluewater lodge at about 9pm, where we basically went to bed as we had to be up and ready for 7.15am to get the coach to denarau to catch the ferry up to the first Island South Sea.
South Sea Island is the smallest of the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands. When we arrived we got a very warm welcome with the staff singing and playing the guitar, it was beautiful, so tiny which really felt like we were on an island (if that makes sense??) After a little welcome chat we were left to do whatever we wanted.. sunbathing it was.. until dinnertime of course, where they served a lovely BBQ buffet lunch. Chicken, fish, sausage and steak with pasta, salad and coleslaw.. the best we'd eaten in a while!!
That afternoon Peter decided to go snorkelling as all water activities were free at any time on South Sea. This worked out really well, as we just went Kayaking, snorkelling etc whenever we wanted or basically got fed up of sunbathing (which is quite often with Peter.) That evening we grabbed a beer and sat waiting for sunset, such a beautiful sight.
Our evening meal was served on the beach under candle light, beautiful. After dinner everybody chose a hermit crab and their lucky number, wrote the number on the back of the crabs shell. Yes thats right we had a crab race and what a laugh it turned out to be. Our crab must of been in a mood or something because it was rubbish but what do you expect when you call it crabby knickers.
The following morning we got a wake up call, shouting us for breakfast..7am.. a bit early for our liking but we got up. That day was just filled with Sunbathing, Kayaking, snorkelling and swimming.. what else is there to do on a tiny island really??
We could have definitely of stayed one more night on South Sea but we unfortunately we had to leave at 9am the following morning. We had a ferry journey of 3hrs to get to our next Island .. Barefoot.
Barefoot was a lot larger than South Sea and when arriving at Barefoot we didn't get the warmest of welcomes but thats not everything is it??
We got shown to our basic bure, which we shared with one girl for the first night. No locks on our doors so we basically had to put a pebble under the door every night. Haha!!
When sitting down for dinner we started talking to a lovely couple called Simon and Katherine from England, who became our Barefoot buddies. Again what more can you do on an island apart from go in the sea and sunbathe. Unfortunately the watersports were not free this time. So yeeaah you guessed it, thats what we did all afternoon. Until evening came when we grabbed a shower (with great difficulty.. in the dark with hardly any water), had tea and watched some fire dancing.
The second day on barefoot consisted of SUNBATHING .. surprise surprise, walking up the hill to the lovely viewpoint (which you can see on the pictures) and playing volleyball before tea time. Ohh and i forgot to mention Barefoot is situated right at the side of Manta-ray channel.. We had to listen for the staff to shout 'Mantas.. Mantas'.. before we could grab some snorkel gear and set off in the boat. Unfortunately this didn't happen often whilst we were staying on Barefoot.
3rd Day on Barefoot Island
A chinese couple came to the island that morning and without dragging the story out basically argued .. very loud.. for 24hrs and then left the island not speaking to each other.. i think everybody could safely say that was the end of their relationship.. haha!!
Anyways that morning we did a scuba induction which was free. We just got a taster of how things work and breathing underwater. It was pretty cool and I think we both would be keen to maybe try diving at some point. Shame we didn't do it on our travels in Thailand. That afternoon we went for a walk along the rocks around the island, where Lucy slipped on her back, banging the bottom of it.. after 3 days the bottom of her back turned black. Walking back to the beach like a cripple we heard people shouting 'MANTA'S' so we ran to grab our snorkel gear and jumped on the boat... we had no such luck.. nothing at all.
That night we found a mouse in the bin, inside a water bottle which was pretty cute and apparently before we had gone to bed there were 3 other mice in our bure. That was our last night on Barefoot so the following morning we had to pack ready for a 3.5hr ferry journey back to Nadi Bay. On the small boat sailing back towards the ferry we saw 4 or 5 dolphins swimming along side of us which was pretty cool, it made up for not seeing any manta's.
Our last days in Fiji were spent in Nadi at blue water lodge getting ready for the U..S..of..A. Crazy thinking that was our next destination...
