Hiya, it seems as though I have quite forgotten about this. So, let's see what I can do.
First, this past weekend we went on a BCA trip to Stonehenge, Salisbury and Portsmouth. I will talk about each of them separately in a minute. But, as for the rest of these past two weeks, I have been working hard on my first assignment that is due in 11 days - WHAT! ELEVEN DAYS. Yep, looks like this week will be long and dreadful. But, to many of you, a first assignment is no big deal, whoopie; however to me, it is a big deal! This is my first of only two, TWO, assignments that will determine my whole class grade. I have to read many academic articles and complete four worksheets over them. It is supposed to be approximately 1,000 words - I think. But anyways, on a positive note, my room has a new look! Georgie (one of my flat mates) has so graciously let me use her extra bed set. It is purples and whites and looks very elegant. Plus, there is even a matching pillow case! I was so excited when she redid my room last night. It feels more like home now that my motel-looking, blues/greys floral print duvet is gone. And.... I attempted my first American meal for the girls. It was a fail though. I made baked spaghetti, but since Georgie is vegetarian it literally was just like all the other spaghetti bakes the girls make, except for it was in a different pan. (Next time I'm making beef and noodles). Then, we had as close to American s'mores as we could get. They were so delicious! We "roasted" the marshmallows in the oven and let the chocolate sit on top to get soft. Since they don't have graham crackers over here, we had to use digestive biscuits - almost the same thing. Point it, they were fantastic! Now for my weekend....
Stonehenge was quite interesting. If you have only ever pictured enormous rocks in a circle, you aren't missing much. The history of Stonehenge and the way the imagination works when actually seeing the rocks was way more exciting. Of course we took typical touristy pictures of us jumping, sitting, kicking, and all sorts of other things to the rocks. We were there early in the morning when the sun was rising and it was absolutely beautiful. There was dew on the ground which reflected the sunlight almost perfectly. Because Stonehenge was built on a hill, the landscape was forever wide. I imagine it to be quite a peaceful place when there aren't a lot of tourist there.
Salisbury was a very short stop for us. We went to the cathedral and walked around the town center. I think our biggest enjoyment was the swans. All swans in England belong to the queen, and therefore they are all tagged. The river was pretty and the ducks and swans were cheap entertainment. We also went shopping a bit while we were there, but I didn't buy anything except a few postcards. We also ate at this little cupcake shop.. mmm. They were quite large cupcakes and very tasty!
Our last stop was Portsmouth. Before going to the hotel, we went to the older part of town along the water. It was so amazing! I am totally a country girl, and it hasn't changed since I've been here. I loved being by the water, away from all of the city-ness. There were no large buildings, quick moving traffic or any other noises to disrupt the quietness. (except us laughing). It was a bit chilly though from the water, but we all enjoyed collecting the rocks and shells and trying to skip rocks in the water. We walked around the shops there a bit then went to a sports bar for dinner. We were all starving and just craving a big meal - so, we ordered steak! Well, some of the group did, the others of us ordered this chicken bake dish with chips (french fries) and peas. It was soooo good! Then on Sunday, we went on a boat tour of the HMS Victory first thing. It was really neat. I'm not into the whole boat/nautical thing, but I found this to be really interesting. The ship was massive and just the history of life on board was so intriguing. I wish I could have taken pictures because I was just blown away by the whole thing. Then we went to the Mary Rose Museum and just toured the rest of town. It was a good weekend away, but I would have rather been here at Cheltenham working on coursework as I am a bit stressed.
It is quite late and I'm sort of out of it today - I apologize for the boring post. But, be excited because my next post will be real exciting! I've been waiting to write about it, and I've decided it will be my next one.
As for now, cheeri-o!
On a side note for myself: my camera is broken, my lost package of textbooks is even more long-gone, stamps for my packages to be sent home are super expensive, and I'm gaining weight... quickly!
