Today we woke up on time and had breakfast in the hotel. We met the two sisters from New Zealand from our group, Lisa and Jen. There was lots for breakfast including green Thai custard and a green fruit that none of us could identify. A nice lady told us it was guava and showed us the juice version too. We met the group and our local guide and walked to the river to jump on a boat. At least this one waited long enough for us to get in :) A really interesting tour to see the wooden shacks along the canal, a few of them falling to bits, washing hanging over the water and little wooden boats stored on stilts. Nearly every house also had an aerial or satellite dish and we saw a couple of flat screen TVs as well as a motorbike on a porch. Along the way the guide pointed out huge lizards that eat the rats in the canal, very like komodo dragons. Outside the temple we were given chunks of bread to throw in the water. Huge catfish splashed up fighting fiercely for it. Some people nearly ended up out the other side of the boat they were so close. We finished the tour and went on to Wat Pao where mum and i had been last time. The massive gold reclining Buddha is still amazing though and it was good to go round the temple with a guide this time. He told us a lot about being a monk and worshipping in a temple. We had rime to ourselves after that and mum made a beeline for the massage training school which has been on her list since our first trip. I must have forgotten what i thought of it last time. I vaguely remember one being enough. I was right the first time! It must be good for you cause it really hurts and you have to lie there looking all relaxed as they twist and contort you and press all their weight trhough their thumbs into points along your body :-/ After suviving the massage we decided to walk to Chinatown avoiding all tuk tuk drivers and their stories. We walked through an amazing flowermarket to get there but didnt see much in Chinatown. Very hot and sweaty we jumped in a taxi whose driver tried to convince me to work in Thailand as a teacher :) Back to the hotel for a welcome swim before we headed for the train station to catch a night train to Chiang Mai. We found ourselves split into different carriages on the train. Six of us were together and we sat chatting and trying to work out how the seats turned into beds. Jen and Lisa (Nz), Matt from England, Jennifer from the US and mum and I. Mum is already a big hit :D It feels like a good group :) The two in the other carriage were Karishma and Sinit from England as well as Limny our guide from Cambodia. We had the jolliest man i have ever met offering us dinner and drinks. He was smiley all the time and had a fantastic laugh. He took a shine to us, sitting with us as he took our order and making us laugh. He patted his tummy calling himself Buddha and would call moneeey moneeey when it was time to pay. We had a carriage guard too who came round and flipped the seats into bunks with curtains. Very cosy and private. Shame i didnt sleep much :( So much for being able to sleep anywhere.
