Brookton to Highbury, 87km.
Up bright and early I was ready to push on for another day. I left the campsite at
5.30am with the first light appearing over the horizon to the east. I rejoined the highway with a chilly headwind pushing against me. The sun was slowly rising and warming the landscape to the left of me whilst a full moon sat to the right of me in the crystal blue sky, it was very serene.
The next couple of hours was hard work, my legs felt heavy and the headwind was stealing any energy I did have. There was no ebb or flow in the wind it was a constant pressure which I was pushing against. All morning I struggled to find the right gear, none felt right and I was feeling aggravated. At one point I stopped to check my tires as I was convinced I must have a puncture, unfortunately I didn't, that meant it was me struggling. I plugged into my music and just got my head down. After a couple hours I rolled into Narrorgin. I knew I had reached my 70km target and if I wanted I could find a camp spot and pitch up but I wanted to push on to the Highbury Tavern another 17km down the road. I had slept in my tent for three nights and wanted some aircon and a decent shower. Somehow and from somewhere I got a second wind and burned the last 17km, the wind might have died down or it was pendulum driving me on. In no time I got to the tavern. I had a very enjoyable lunch at the tavern with Rob and Ross, Rob was from Zimbabwe and Ross from Bucks, they had some very interesting stories and pasts. After devouring some fish and chips I sat in my motel room in my y-fronts (that's right, I rock y-fronts cos I'm a real man) with the aircon on full whack, it was deserved relief from 4 days of 40C.
Arh, some blog participation for you now. reply in the comments section. Today's subject is ornithological in nature as my bird knowledge is basic at best (Jane mainly aimed at you, thought you might enjoy the homework)
1) I keep seeing parakeets of all different colours. Are they indigenous to oz or did Jimi Hendrix come here?
2) I saw a pretty amazing sight of a baby bird of prey practicing swooping and hunting its mum, who was playing the prey. What birds of prey do they have here?
3) I think I keep seeing a really small bird, literally a couple of inches, maybe a hummingbird? What is this bird or am I dehydrated.
I realise I could research this myself but I'm fracking tired and wanna sleep, Ok!!
Enjoy

Jan Marek Szubert Lots of parakeets in Oz, also go by the name of lorikeets, rosellas, and that is apart from the full blown parrots. For raptors the biggest flying variety are the wedgies, or wedge tailed eagles, but there are also Ospreys, numerous owls and many other smaller hawks also. I have seen humming birds in Northern Queensland, but not sure about WA
Chris - Jane Hi Luke keep up the pedalling but still reckon you should ditch the push bike and get something that is not Luke powered because petrol is cheaper than the groceries you are consuming As regards the birds I only know about robins kites and t*** ? chris reckons humming birds can be seen all over the southern hemisphere as far north as central America
lukeszubert Thanks guys. Lots of interesting pics and vids of birds to show you, just don't know what they are. So Marek are parakeets indigenous?
