- Up at 6:30 (before our alarms) which was probably good as we were tight on time.
- Had breakfast at the hotel, then shuttle to the airport.
- Made our way through the airport, found I had a small water bottle in my bag from the prior flight which security identified (wasn't an issue - they just took it).
- Tried to find another café that wasn't a western café to get a coffee to try Bali coffee again to see if any better, but once in the terminal all were western (that I could find in person or online).
- Flight was a Dreamliner (340 passengers), was the roomiest plane I have ever flown especially considering is a budget airline. Windows also had no shades but were dimmable with electronic controls to various levels (never fully blocked, but very tinted).
- The flight was certainly more comfortable that normal, especially landing with less cabin pressure increase (i.e. the cabin remains higher pressure throughout, so don't feel the change anywhere near as much).
- The comparison of Bali airport to Singapore very striking (as expected).
- Was able to immediately get a SIM for Ethan that works in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia so got that sorted. Collected bags, then to find Nanny and Grandad who landed a few hours before us (as it happens landed a few minutes after we took off).
- On leaving the baggage claim, found that we were directly next to jewel, which is amazing! Very impressive space of gardens with the water fall. Ended up meeting Nanny and Grandad here, went for a walk through. There are some paid access points and activities, Ethan and I may do these when we leave, was all a bit confusing.
- Took taxi to the accommodation, the contrast on the road and in the airport to Bali is staggering. Like the hotel pickups in Singapore wearing suit & tie holding ipads with names, compared to bali where outside most are smoking wearing very casual clothes and a hand-written signs taped to posts….
- Turns out the airport taxi ways go over the road, was quite a site to see planes taxying over the road! For one of the most densely populated parts of the world, it is interesting how much green space, wide roads and spacious (until in the city) the drive was.
- At the accommodation, had a few challenges getting in, but were able to resolve. However the setup leaves a lot to be desired, like no toilet paper at all, the TV is missing (have a remote and bracket…), and the towels and bedding are actually 2 towels (for 4 people…) and bedding is a throw blanket (I'm going to have to use the towel as a blanked tonight). Also Wi-Fi details were incorrect. It's generally not well setup, but not a major issue as we had come prepared adequately.
- Walked into town, and found our way to China town, interestingly at the "start" of China Town there is a Hindu Temple… stopped and found some odd lollies (to get into Aircon). Is a bit hotter than Bali.
- Wandered around, tried Durian, wasn't actually that bad, but Ethan wasn't too impressed!
- Got Thai for dinner, which was pleasant, although not at Bali prices…
- Then went on a mission to find toilet paper, which proved surprisingly difficult. When we finally found a place, it sold larger packages then we needed, and after wandering and getting directions of varying degrees of usefulness and stores that you would expect to sell toilet paper, but didn't. The side effect was finding so odd "goodies" in the way of drinks and snacks (including local Tiger beer for $2 a can!). We did end up finding some, albeit it only in large packs.
- Back to accommodation, to try our finds (including some octopus chips - which had no octopus or any seafood, but were a sweet savory chip that Ethan and Grandad liked).
- Plan to look around the bay tomorrow.
