Right next blog up and how do I go about describing Rototua, hmmmm??? Well first things first it stinks!!! The whole place is built around hundereds of thermal springs which produce hot mud and water. However not only does water pour out of the ground but along with it is the smell of sulphur and we all know what that smells like, rotten eggs!!! Some places in the town aren't too bad but every now and then you walk round the corner and are hit slap bang round the back of the head with the rotten egg bat. You choke on it for a few seconds before darting to the nearest area with fresh air, man the locals must have fun round here. There is however an upside to this, being that there are loads of hot thermal pools to relax in. Even our campsite had its own natural spa and we spent one night chilling in the open air one staring up at the stars, it was class.
Anyways apart from the stench and the thermal springs Rotorua has loads ofother things to do and is competing with Taupo in order to be the extreme activity capital of the north. Being the activity junkies we are we set about trying a couple, namely Lugeing and Zorbing. I'll start with the Zorbing and I'll explain what it is as some of you may not have heard of it. Basically Zorbing is when you jump in this massive hamster ball and the fill it with water and then they push you down a hill so you flip tumble all the way to the bottom. I know it sounds a bit random but it is great fun. Me and Linz decided to go in one together as it saved a few pennies. As you go down the hill its kinda like a water ride as your thrown about and get totally soaked even though there isn't really that much water in it. Being in there with Linz made it all the more fun as we kept bumping into each other, although she tried her best not to bump by clinging onto me the whole way down. Zorbing is awesome and not scary at all, it is just good fun and has now got me thinking that there could be a market for it in UK, anyone wanna start a business up with me?
As for the Lugeing this was cool as well, its kinda like gokarting and sledging rolled into one, although its not done on snow (unlike the winter Olympics). The Lugeing was at the top of a small moutain surrounding Rotorua and to get to the top we had to take a Gondala up. Once up there you go on the Scenic route first and then after you have mastered that your allowed to go down the Intermediate and then the Advanced. Now when starting off Linz was a little cautious and was driving her sled like Miss Daisy with 6 year olds flying past shouting "get out of the way Grandma!!!" However this was only short lived and by the end we were having great races, cutting everyone up. Once again as with Zorbing, Lugeing was a great craic and reccommendation to all.
Apart from the above we did take a trip to a nature reserve, with the main objective of seeing a Kiwi for the first time. It was a mini little reserve with a few other native NZ animals but the highlight was to be the Kiwi. However once we got to his enclosue the little Kiwi was asleep and all we could see was his back and ass, doh! So although we can say we have seen a Kiwi, don't ask us what it is like as all we saw was a furry brown ball!
With good times and laughs had by all (all meaning me and Linz, is always us two) we headed up north towards Auckland and most importantly fresh air!!!!!
