Another blog I here you groan, well don't worry only another few more weeks and that'll be it! Right I'll start off with most important thing first, Spiderman 3 was disappointing. Its tough for me to say as I love all things marvel, but hey it could have been better. Anyway that was our first experience of Queenstown, I went cinema and Linz went shopping, fits eh. Also later on that evening we popped out for a bite to eat and met up with a familar face from uni, Emily Gray. We had a cool evening chatting and sitting by the fire in this cosy Irish pub. Emily had said that she was looking out for us as knew we were in Queenstown, however wasn't too sure she would have remembered us as last time she saw me I wasn't wearing glasses and had a skinhead, man that was back in the day!
The following day extreme was on the menu and today was all about water. We booked a jet boat trip and white water rafting on the Shotover river. First up was the jet boat, which was awesome. Not really much participation is needed from the passengers as you just sit there and get flung around. The boat flies down the river dead close to rocks and every now and then does a 360 which gets you proper soaked. A little fact for you now is that the jet engine used on the boat was invented by a Kiwi and to ride on water it only needs a depth of 4 inches, good stat eh! After the boat ride, next up was the rafting. We met at the place where the boat dropped us off but the actual start of the rafting was quite far away. We had to take the dodgiest road ever to get there. The road is literally cut out of a mountain and at times becomes pretty hairy as it feels like bus is hanging off edge. The guide even said that this was one of two roads in NZ where your not insured to drive, reassuring eh!
When we did finally manage to get there in one piece, we then geared up and were ready to go. This was when Linz started to feel a little panicy as everyone was saying that we were totally gonna flip and end up in some serious rapids. I think this all stems from her Innisfail river experience and avid blog readers out there will remember her near death experience. Anyway with a nervous Linz on board we set off and started to learn the ropes of rafting. I think we worked quite well as a team and when the guide shouted "forward" or "back paddle" we were right on it, although the chinese bird in front of me could have been a bit better, I was gonna chuck her overboard if she didn't get with the programme better, but luckily for her she pulled her finger out. Most of the trip down the river was pretty steady and not too bad but there were section where we hit grade 3 and 4 rapids and these were awesome. At this time it was all hands to the pump and we had to paddle for our lives. This was until the point when the guide shouted 'get down' and 'hold on' as these were the hard core bits. Check out some of pictures for these bits and you can see a few scared faces! At one point we went through an old gold mining tunnel, which was dead cool as you couldn't see anything and all you could hear was the river around you. Anyway in the end we managed to make it along the whole river without anyone in our boat falling out (another boat did lose a fella, who jumped into our boat, cheeky git) and after a hard day on the river we headed back to QT for some well deserved beers. That night we met up with Vishy, a geezer from our Ayers Rock trip and partied down in QT with him. I think all were pretty wasted and the highlights of the night was Vishy eating some birds face on dancefloor, me making a new hairy friend and the burger on way home, Fergburger, I could eat them all day long!
Well here comes what you have all been waiting for the part of the blog which describes how hardcore the Wolfe is by jumping off a platform with a bit of string attached! As I did not partake in this madness I'll let the dare devil explain herself..........
Hey folks, Wolfemeister General checking in for duty. So, the bungy, well it was always my plan before we came away to do one. However after the vomitting incident following our skydive I decided there was no way I could bungy, full stop. However being in QT it's all bungy this and that and after talking to a few drunkards the night before I decided I'd give it a shot... this did not however stop the sickness feelings, dizzyness and my body suddenly spasming every time I thought about 'the edge'. There are a few different bungys in QT and I decided on The Ledge which stands 400 metres above the town - lovely. Getting strapped in to the gear I have honestly never been so scared in my life and even thinking about it now makes my whole body go all rigid. However the dudes up there were really nice and made it seem like I had just popped in for a cup of tea (I wish). So, after a goodbye wave over the edge to the Grantster I heard a faint 3, 2, 1... and suddenly I had leapt over the edge head first and was hurtling towards the ground below, letting out a rather loud scream as I did so. All of a sudden the elastic then catches you and you are pretty much just dangling over Queenstown attached to a rubber band - wahey. I was still shaking as I was pulled back up to the platform and although it was a cool experience just kept thinking 'thank the lord I've done it, it's over'... hmmm, wrong! Having a bit of banter the dudes said it is much better to do it backwards and I should have a go as it was a quiet day and they were bored. After initially telling them where to go I thought about it for a minute then said what the hell, let's do it, so off we went again! This time I had to run forwards and turn just as got to the edge so that I fell into the air backwards, as if falling onto a big comfy bed - yeah bloody right! Throwing myself into it, literally, I lept off and turned to see the faces of the guys on the edge as I plummeted down. At this point I screamed (quote) 'the most blood curdling scream' they have ever heard from a bungy-er (DVD viewings available soon) and then became kind of hyterical as I bounced up and down over Queenstown and couldn't stop laughing! I was so glad I did the second jump as it really was more enjoyable than the first and I would definately recommend bungy jumping to anyone and everyone. It is like a proper battle with yourself to get over the edge, but man I am so glad I did and think I may even want to go again... and again! Linz x
Rather her than me eh! Anyway after that craziest we headed off for some mad, nuts crazy, indoor mini golf!!!! Man we are sooo extreme! In all serious though it was best mini golf ever and kinda like the one on Happy Gilmore, but without the piss taking clown, "your gonna die clown!"
After a few eventful days we had to head off from Queenstown to the next destination but not after thinking we could spend forever and a day in the place. Not only has it got loads of cool things to do, it is in a amazing setting with mountains all around and situated right on a massive lake. I hope you can appreciate from the photos how amazing the place is and if anyone gets the chance to go, do it, it's great!
