Hello out there can you hear me???? I'm only saying that as we are now pretty much as far away as we can be from Blighty, we're in New Zealand!!! Originally we were supposed to fly into Queenstown but as we couldn't get the campervan we wanted we switched things around a little flew into Christchurch instead. Our first impression of NZ were pretty limited as we weren't picking up our campervan until the follow day and so as a little treat we booked into a hotel. It was heaven, no sharing with snoring Irish fellas and Satellite TV, needless to say we slothed to the max! Apart from that the other thing we have noticed is that it is a wee bit colder than Oz!!! We have been telling ourselves for a while now to be prepared for some cold weather and although we knew it was coming it was still a shock to the system considering we haven't had winter for over a year! The next day we picked up our hog, which we have named Evie. She's a real beaut and has got all mod cons. CD player, microwave, fridge, blinds for all windows, DVD player and a heated towel rail, yes a heated towel rail, class or what! Driving out from the hire company, we were both cracking up as I couldn't get over the fact that every time I looked over my shoulder there was our bedroom, kitchen and lounge all rolled into one and I was driving it. Don't worry we have got over it now but still have a little chuckle to ourselves every now and then. Now with the open road at our mercy we drove about 500 yards to the campsite and plugged in for the next couple of nights.
Our impressions of Christchurch is that is very similar to Cambridge and has a familiar British feel to it. We wandered around the city and took in a lot of the sites, Cathedral, river, museum and shopping (can't really wear our boards and tee's over here). The walk along the river was dead nice as all the trees were shedding their leaves and everything has got that autumn feel. I've lost count how many times Linz has broken in chorus singing "Autumn days when the grass is jeweled...." Christchurch has a very laid back feel to it and in places you could be forgiven to thinking that you were in a little country village. After braving the cold for most of the day it was back to the campervan for spag bol and a cosy DVD session, we're crazy us backpackers, eh!? To be honest we were gonna need the warmth with what we had planned the next day.....
