After shaking after Koala fever we hit the Great Ocean road again to see the most famous sites, the 12 Apostles. As you can see from the pictures the day got better and better and unfortunately the pictures of the actual Apostles aren't as amazing as some of the other sites, such as the Bay of Islands. Before we hit the Apostles we found another pretty much deserted beach and in an Neil Buchanen Art Attack special we wrote our names in the sand. All the other passers by on the cliffs were totally impressed, well maybe not the French guys whos names we rubbed out to do our own! Come on la roast beef!
The 12 Apostles along with all the other limestone formations were amazing. It is totally worth all the fuss as the site of the blues and greens of the sea mixing it with the reds and yellows of the cliffs are something to be seen. Along this part of the Great Ocean Road there are lots of different stop offs every kilometre or so which show off these formations. These included ones named London Bridge, Bay of Islands, Loch Ard Gauge and Bay of Martyrs. During the whole time we were viewing these sites I continued to wow Linz with my Geography knowledge and to her credit she actually seemed to be a) interested and b) awake, a think a thank you is order for her for putting up with me that day!
On our way we stopped off at a little town called Port Campbell. Again a funny little place like the other small towns on the coast, although this time it was a lot more lively as there was a kids sports day happening on the beach. This kind of sports day totally summed up the way aussie kids are raised in comparison to UK kids as it was all about swimming and not things such as egg and spoon races. We stayed and watched for a while and after thinking we shouldn't watch a group of kids for too long (?!?!?!?) we headed back on out.
That night we stayed in Port Fairy, the town which time forgot, kinda like Braintree!!! We hit the local bar and emersed ourselves in the local culture....beer! The pub we hit was cool and as it was Saturday night it was pretty much full. There were a couple of stag (bucks) and hen doos kicking off and these were all fancy dress. We now have some great ideas for dressing up in the future, especially one in particular, dressing up as Jesus, classic!
Next on our agenda the following day was to head up the coast to Cape Bridgewater where we had booked to go and this boat and view a colony of fur seals. This was so cool man. We headed out on this little dingy boat and crossed pretty rough seas till we got to the colony. There were tons seals doing all sorts of stuff ranging from slothing out, play fighting, swimming and jumping out of the sea around us. Such a unquie experience beging this close to them. It was also pretty cheap and if anyone else is around the area I would recommend they give it a go.
After this we only stopped once on our way to Robe and this was to check out this place called Blue Lake in Mount Gambier. Now as the name suggests it was a blue lake, but the blueness of itself was breathtaking, but the only way to explain it is with a picture so have a gander at the photos and your know what I mean. When we arrived at Robe we got a little lost and ended up finding this beach (Long Beach) which you could drive on. Now I know the car rental place said that we were only allowed to stick to the roads but the lure of pretending to be the Hoff was too tempting and we cruised away. As for Robe itself it is pretty much the nicest place I have ever been in my life. There were amazing beaches surrounding it with stunning views and the town itself was immaculate, not one blade of grass out or order. We stumbled upon this little secluded bay and watched the sunset tucking into some local fish and chips. Even though we had a hell of a lot of driving to do the next day up to Adelaide, this was a really good way to end our Great Ocean Road trip.
Right so that was the last few days, when writing it down I can't believe how much we have fitted in. We are now up in Adelaide and have given the car back, all in one piece, result! Tomorrow we are heading off on a 6 day trip though Ayers rock and Alice Springs so the next update will be after that.
So until then signing off a very tired Grant
