Here we are with another blog and it may not be that long as I'm off to see Spiderman 3 in a bit. I may add that I am going it alone as Linz has put her foot down and not coming, hmmm seems to remind me of another incident involving a Indian and a Cupboard?!?!?
Any way back to the blog and this one is about Dunedin. Dunedin is quite a big city by NZ standards and I for one was looking forward to mixing it with humans and not the thousand of sheep we were used to on the open road. As it happens one of our mates from the good old banana factory was in town and so Nat made our gang into a tremendous threesome. First things frist we got some drinking under way. It was our first night out in NZ and pretty cool, although a tad random. We chillind in this Irish bar most of the night and then headed to a couple of random clubs. I think we were the youngest people in both places and the second club was kinda like a sad singles club for desperate oldies, needless to say we didn't hang long.
The following day we picked up Nat and headed over to the Otago Pennisula. This an area just outside of Dunedin and has plenty of marine wildlife. After visting the Albatross centre and deciding not to take the 30 bucks tour (I mean they're birds, no bird is worth 30 bucks, well maybe if shes really good at cleaning) the guy told us about a beach which we could visit for free and see Sea Lions and Penguins. Obviously free is in our price budget so off we headed. The beach was called Sandfly Beach and the only way to get down to it was down this massive sand dune. We had seen signs that you could glide down it on boards and so it true pikey style I grabbed a couple of bin bags and jumped on all excited. However I didn't move one bit and just got wedged in the sand. The only thing I managed to do was make Linz and Nat piss themselves with laughter, hey thats what I'm here for. Once getting down to the beach we stumbled across loads of Sea Lions. They were all just slothing out on the beach in little groups and it was a totally cool experience to see these massive beasts in the wild. As they are wild you are told not to get too close otherwise they charge at ya and seeing the size of the big male, theres no way I would be messing. He made Damien from The Biggest Loser look anorexic (sorry Oz TV joke). We did mange to spot one Penguin although he did do a runner once he saw us coming. The best bit was getting my revenge on Nat and Linz for laughing at us, as we had to get back up the sand dune. Being super fit (?) I ran up and left the other to drag themselvs up the dune. I may have been over exagerrating about running and dragging but I did have enough time for a cuppa in the van by the time they got back.
That evening me and Linz hit a rugby game, the Highlanders v ACT Brummbies. This was a pretty cool experience as thats what this place is all about and so we got to see loads of Kiwi's all dressed up and abusing the ref. As usual when we see these things the Highlanders (home team) lost to the damn Aussies. Thats now, New York Knicks, Sydney FC and Dunedin Highlanders who we have seen and they have all lost, doh! The atmosphere could have been better as it was an end of season game and neither team had anything to play for. But we did get to see some top players like George Gregan, Sterling Mortlock and Carl Hayman.
One last thing we did in Dunedin will make all you girls out there jealous and it's when we visited the Cadburys chocolate factory. You should have seen Nat and Linz get all excited, snapping their cameras all over the place as if they were in Willy Wonkers factory! The best bit is when you go inside this silo and they turn on this chocolate waterfall. Pretty cool to watch although in true cheese fashion the tour guide made an old Aussie couple sing to operate the "song dector on switch". Waltzing Matilda has never been so funny!
Any way thats was out little trip to Dunedin and off to the west coast we headed with Evie a tad heavier full of chocolate!
