Friday morning at 7 am I left my house for an overnight hiking trip through the Alpujarras, a mountain range on the other side of the Sierra Nevada in Granada. Day one we hiked over 7 miles in about 4 hours including our breaks for water and food. We climbed up one mountain, up to the highest village, down into an extremely deep gorge to eat a picnic by the river. Then we climbed back up the other side and headed back down to our hostel. The next morning we climbed straight to the top with a view on top of the world. We could see the entire Sierra, all of the Alpujarras region and out to the sea where, on a clear day, you can see the mountains of Africa. I have found my favorite place in the world. I camped out on a rock for quite a while just taking in the view. Later, we climbed down into a valley to see the range from a different angle, then back up to a decent height- right at the border of the Mediterranean forest. We saw tons of rivers and waterfalls, two burros and tons of rocks. My heart broke a little when we had to come back to Granada. Now, in addition to my traveling addiction, I now have to hike mountains nonstop.
