Yesterday I went to my first bullfight. It was in Granada?s Plaza de Torros, about a 20-minute walk from my house. I came very close to not going seeing how it?s terrifying and cruel, but all of the Michigan kids decided it was important that we don?t leave Spain without seeing a bullfight and I reluctantly agreed. All of the torreros came out to show off their flashy outfits and dance with their capes. There were little girls in flamenco dresses, just their for show. First the bull ran out of the holding plan seeming pretty aggressive. Two torreros with pink and yellow capes caught his attention and danced around with him, getting him to run under the cape over and over. Once in a while the torro would go after the man so the second torrero would get distracted. Then the caballeros came out, mounted on armored horses carrying long spears. When the torro charged the horse, the caballero stabbed him. Then the picadors came out, with no capes but two fringed hand spears. They danced around until the torro charged them and then stabbed them in the back with the spears. They did this 3-4 times before the matador came out. He is the famous last guy that comes out with the red cape and dances around before he finally kills the torro. He is the most arrogant and shows off quite a bit. The good matadors tend to get down on their knees when they?re fighting, or turn their backs to the torro to show their lack of fear. A few of them would wear the bull out and then pet their face or place their sword on the torro?s head. Although the crowd usually eats this up and cheers ?ole!? the whole time, it really just shows how the torro isn?t naturally aggressive; he just relaxes when he?s not being attacked. When the matador decides he is done showing off, he gets a new sword and stabs the bull between the shoulders, and leaves his sword in the torro that usually dies within a few minutes. Then another guy comes out with a smaller dagger to make sure the bull is completely dead. The crowd cheers and waves white flags for the matador. There is a board of judges that hangs out one white flag to acknowledge the success of the matador. If the crowd is pleased, they chant ?otra? telling the judges to give him another flag. Two white flags means the matador was exceptional and also means that he gets to keep both ears of the torro. (For one flag he only gets to keep one ear). Then they hook up the dead body to the back of two horses and drag it across the arena and out the door. And then? out comes another torro! They actually repeat this horrible process six times over the span of three hours. One thing that helped out the foreigners who weren?t so thrilled about the event is that two matadors got hit! The first one was running away from his torro and the torro caught the matador?s leg with his forehead, no horn-goring action, but the matador was limping for the rest of the fight. The second got a little to close to the horns and was actually thrown up into the air and was on top of the torro?s head being tossed around for a few seconds. These were the highlights since I was definitely rooting for the torro. Needless to say, that was my last bullfight.
