We've almost reached to our halfway point of the programme which means it's time for MPR (mid phrase review) where everyone get together. Every each ICS team in different under developing countries must do a review to discuss about their programme. We was placed in San Carlos university, one of biggest university in Cebu, with UK and Philippines team leaders, UK and Filipino volunteers, youth programme coordinator, and a member of UK deafway staff. The day consists of discussions about each area; Team dynamics, work placement, work placement counterparts, host home, and host home counterparts. It was mainly positives and negatives, exchanging the experiences, emotions, and cultural exchanges as well as few games relating to communication to see how well we communicate with each other. We also talked about how we could improves any negative issues we've experienced and to see if we could changes it for the next 6 weeks.
However, If I could compares today to the first week of training, yes there's a massive difference! We didn't need any interpreters to translate from Filipino sign language to British sign language, the whole training day was spoken in Filipino sign language without any problems! It's amazing how fast we've learn to be fluent in their language in short space of time. We also have great knowledge of their characters comparing to the first week- here is a list of what we've exchanged our experiences;
-they likes to please everyone
- they likes rice on every meal
- yes, yes, and yes to everything
- likes their cold water bucket showers
- we have to ask them a simple short questions cos they usually tell you a detailed story if we asked them a long question!
-movement of eyebrows instead of nodding to say yes or no. We get confused most of times when they don't nod!
-they pouts their lip when they want to point something
-they have weird hand gesture to say 'come here' in a claw movement
-very blunt. They would say you're fat if they thinks you are. They would say you need some exercising. Yes I've been told this many time!
- very detailed and talk active
- they breath in their face cloth in public
- they are very tidied and respective to their homes
- they use women period on face to avoids acne!
-very religious
The list could goes on! I've also got a list of what Filipinos thinks of UK volunteers- You will see the difference of how filipinos' mind works comparing to the UK volunteers;
- well educated
-funny
-enjoyable
-good helpers
-cute
-always positive
-pretty
-easy to talk to
So yeah the day was rather very productive overall! Now roll on to our mini break away to Moalboal!
