One word about Moalboal- amazeballs!
We went to one of beautiful place I've ever been to in my life for our well deserved mid phrase break. Moalboal, three hours drive southwest of Cebu, We got our own beach house surroundings by coconuts palm tree with hammocks attached, BBQ, volleyball and a gate to our very own private white sandy with clear blue water beach. You could say it is like a paradise getaways break for us all!
It has been a roll coaster 6 weeks for us all, we came as a 10 volunteers team and now we're down to 8. Everyone has their own different experiences, views, and work placements. We all have had our shares of laughs, cry, angry, conflicts, and hugs which makes us strong as a team and we wouldn't have survived without each other (I won't lie I really did think I wouldn't have survived first week!). The relationship between Filipino and UK have dramatically improved, we all can communicate with each other in two language (BSL and FSL), and it is amazing how fast our friendships can develop after 6 weeks so yeah it is scary to know we're at our halfway through and the next 6 weeks will come fast before we goes to out separate ways.
Moalboal was a perfect place to relax , switch our minds off, and not to mention any words relating to our programme. We also had a share of Filipino BBQ culture cooked by our team leader, Ronnie, it was called Boodle Fiesta which has rice, chicken, pork, and sausage on the bed of banana leaf gathered with all of us to eat together without forks or knife- yes we ate with our hands!
6 weeks overall have been extremely hard for me- I've witnessed my friend getting mugged, I've witnessed someone giving a birth on our filthy balcony, I've witnessed people having a bath in the street, I've witnessed poor children begging for money, I've witnessed poor families living in a cardboard that looks like a house, I've witnessed deaf children getting inequality education, I've witnessed their lack of deaf awareness, I've witnessed a lot of thing you will never ever witnessed in your life and I'm grateful for this once a lifetime experience opportunity. There is the only thing I've learnt that anybody in the poverty would do ANYTHING for their survival. I can't explain or describe cos none of you would understand until you see it for yourself because before I came here I thought I knew the meaning of 'poverty' but I was wrong, totally wrong. This has changed my aspects of life and myself. In the uk when I see homeless people I don't take notice of them but when I arrived to the Philippines I was shocked at how many homeless people live on the street, it had changed my views on homeless people, I sometimes give up my packed lunch and give it to them instead because it does make the difference seeing them so happy just to receive a meal even if it is just a box of rice.
This week is my week off from work because it's their school holiday, I won't be having a rest, I've decided to create my own project in relate to homeless families. :)
