It has been 3 weeks since i first started working in the school. I could see my confidence is growing each day from the teaching experience, my Filipino Sign Language is getting better, and i have also learnt alot of new things every day especially from the p.e. lesson!
There is also alot of english lessons included in the timetable comparing to the first time i came in when there was hardly any and now they are learning Romeo and Juliet, although, i got to be honest i dont think they are the priority for them as their english level aren't where they should be. We also got a new UK volunteer started working here to help us with the literacy which i'm alot grateful for her as this school need more volunteers to teach. I could see there was slightly improvement in their english level, they learnt the important rules of the writing such as capital letters, commas, full stop, and so on. Their spelling also have improved!
Since we got new volunteer in the school i've been given a new timetable, i will be now teaching english with the designated students in the morning and MAPEH (Music Arts PE History) in the afternoon. I had my first session on tuesday with 4th year, 8th and 7th grade, it was an interesting experience! we exchanged our games; i taught them bulldog, fireball, dance, grandmother, and many more, they loved it! I was encouraged to join in their filipino game of "flick the flop", it is a bit similar to the cricket rules but instead you dont have a bat nor ball and the sticks! They placed a can on the ground and drew a circle around it and a line above it for a defence to stand behind it and the opposite team have to flick their flop directly at the can and run to get it before the defence does! It was difficult to plan their p.e. lesson during to the lack of equipment, all they got is a table tennis, a flat basketball, old football, badmintion ball but no rackets, and a golf ball. I've got a surprise for them in the store so watch this space for the update!
We was also asked to be a judge for their science and maths fair where students have to perform infront of the school in relevance to the subjects. They designed their own outfit out of their creative, in relate to the science, and do a dance in relate to mathematics. I was amazed at how good they was at dancing! The awards was also given out to the best dancers, art, and the team performance, we was asked to hand them out and have photos taken. By the mean of having photos taken there was a thousands! We literally are famous to them because we are white!
It's my day off from work today because in the Philippines it is their "World Teacher's Day", and tomorrow we are invited to watch the students' performance for the teachers- it is should be interesting!
