Today was Bastille Day and it is a HUGE national holiday. Almost everything closes down for the day, and the whole town seems to turn out for the fire works by the Eiffel Tower.
Class took up most of today and then a quick run to the single grocery that was open to buy things for lunch. Then Rachel and i began coming up with our plan to see the fireworks. After some looking on the internet I found a sky scraper in Paris, the tallest one in Paris, The Montparnasse 56. It is 56 stories high, reachable by an elevator that takes you from floor 0 to floor 56 in about 36 seconds. At the top it has a little cafe, and one of the best views of Paris, a 360 degree view of Paris.
So, after some planning we finally decided to try our luck there! After classes and a class meeting we re-grouped in our rooms and then headed out. We found the Tower very easily and even had time to enjoy a dessert down in the nearby cafes before we bought our tickets (16 euro) and headed to the top. The elevator went so fast my ears popped!
The view was totally amazing! I mean all of Paris was totally visible, every inch of it. We staked out some amazing seats right in front of the windows facing the Eiffel Tower and waited for several hours! But it was totally worth the wait and the cost when the show started. We could see it so clearly. It was totally breath taking watching all the fireworks come up over the Eiffel Tower, but we could also see fireworks being shot off all over Paris all at once, totally amazing.
Well, I'm superly tired and heading to bed to rest up for my field trip tomorrow!
Bon soir!
