Greetings!
Well, we went up to the Carolinas, just to turn around and go right back to Florida...not only the same state, but the same HOTEL we just left. Nuts. We had an absolutely grueling schedule but at least we had incredible weather: Belle Glade, Delray Beach, Sarasota, Ft. Pierce, Key Largo.
Belle Glade - Talk about a vocal audience! They were actually responding to what we were saying. I have a line that goes: "You have the ability to lift a congregation up so high they have to look down to see Heaven." A lady in the audience called out "Wow, that's really high!" And in Ren's big Town Council scene were he quotes the Bible and forgets a quote, someone in the audience called out the "forgotten" line...incredible....
Delray Beach - OK, we did 5 shows here in 3 days. We were so exhausted by the end of this weekend it was ridiculous. I tried talking on the phone Saturday night (1 show Friday, 2 Saturday, 2 Sunday) and my voice was so tired I had to hang up after 3 minutes. This would almost be ok if the shows had been worth it...but these were the worst audiences we had ever had. Particularly Friday night. It was as if no one was out there. Our stage manager had to come back at intermission and give us a pep talk to keep us going...Now, it turns out The audience was just REALLY REALLY old...they gave us a standing ovation, but it took them most of the curtain call to physically stand up. Thank you Florida!! This is the venue where I received my Diva star...for those of you who have been following this blog, you know about Jenny's and my running joke about me being the cast diva and my wanting a Diva Star to appear at my dressing station...not only did I get a Diva star, but it has its own traveling case, to keep it safe between each and every venue. I've promised her it will go with me to all future gigs :)
Sarasota - One my favorite places we've ever played. It was huge and sold out. The outside of the theater was purple - my favorite color - and the inside was so big we all kept getting lost. Plus it was right on the ocean and gorgeous. Our hotel was OLD but it was right on water too with a beautiful view. Lovely.
Ft. Pierce - I think was our best show yet. Everything just came together. We've played a number of theaters Shain & I hit while on Christmas Carol last year, but this is where we closed the tour...I got a little sentimental...
Key Largo - Arrived early in the day to go to the beach...sadly, we went to a man-made beach with the beach more pebbles than sad...but it was still pretty and very happy to spend some time in the sun. The show...wow, the show...so, we performed at a private community that has its own auditorium. This place was obscenely wealthy. The going rate for the basic condo is $1 million...the basic house is minimum $10 million... We pulled up next to their landing strip for the resident's private jets. We were promised no jets land after sundown...which was good b/c our band had to play outside in the back of one of our trucks... The people were so nice (and gave us the best meal we've had in months). This is one I won't forget soon!!
Now back in the northeast...missing the warm weather...write about it soon!
Enjoy!
