Hey!
Today is Thursday at Oxford University. I haven't had very much time to blog lately, so I will try my best to catch everyone up on the new stuff!
Thank you so much for all the cards and pictures lately! They have really added to my room and made it feel like home!
Let's see...Sunday night we arrived back in Oxford around midnight. We were so exhausted to we just went to bed!
Monday I had lectures like usual, next lunch, and then it was time for the soccer matches! Nebraska was split into three teams and each of us had to play Virginia Tech and Texas Methodist. My team started by playing Virgina Tech and we lost 3-0. Their team had some actualy soccer players on it (most of my team had never played the game before). Next we played one of the other Nebraska teams and won! Finally we played the Texas school and lost. At the end of the three games we were totally exhausted! It was a long walk back to Oxford and then time to shower and get ready for dinner right away.
After dinner a large group of us hit up the pubs...we made it to about 5 new pubs that night...slowly working our way to 63!
Tuesday afternoon the student assistants took us on a tour of a castle in Oxford. The castle was mainly used as a jail and torture area...the audio/video tour got long and boring so we skipped a few of the displays...
That night we made it to two pubs then met up with the entire Nebraska group at a pub called The Jam Factory. The professors came out with us and had some beers! They are so much fun! The Jam Factory had a special pear beer cider which was so delicious...yum!
Wednesday after class a group of about 20 of us took the train to London to go to the musical "Wicked". The musical was SO GOOD! If you don't know...the musical is about the story of the witches from The Wizord of Oz "before" they were in the movie. Such a great performance! I guess that the character that played the bad witch in this musical is one of the best performers around the world. She has been performing at the Victoria Apollo Theatre in London for some time now!
After the play we took the tube to the Thames River and walked to meet the rest of the Nebraska students at the Globe Theatre. The Globe Theatre was where Shakespeare's company performed his plays hundreds of years ago. The original theatre burned down a long, long time ago, but this theatre is an exact replica. The theatre was amazing but we had kinda bad seats on the side of the stage. We saw a performance of Shakespeare's play "Love's Labors Lost". It was hard to understand the play...so a bunch of us left at intermission (whoops!) and went to The Pizza Express for pizza! Such an "American" thing to do. Ha!
After the play we boarded the bus back to Oxford. The bus ride was an extra hour long because we had to drive through the central part of London. Finallyyyyy we arrived back at Oxford!
Today was full of lectures. lunch and an afternoon nap. At 3:00 about 15 Nebraska students met for "High Tea". We went to High Tea at the Old Parsonage Hotel about 6 blocks away from Jesus College. Everyone was dressed up very nicely for and we had many different types of tea, cookies, scones, sandwiches, desserts, and more scones! It was so delicious! We took a lot of cute pictures at high tea! One of our professors, Dr. Horsewood, met us at the hotel for tea. He is so entertaining!
After we finished the tea and desserts we went to a very classy pub called The Duke of Cambridge. It just happened to be happy hour so we tried a lot of different cocktails. Morgan and I started out with cosmos and then we tried Russian Punch, Spice Island, and some others. I snagged the menu from the bar so that we can make these drinks at home! The bartenders were amazing and so much fun to watch. A lot of the guys had bloody mary's and they said they were great!
I just got back from high tea and the pub a little bit ago and now I'm organizing pictures so that I am ready to show you all when I get home!
There was a scare here at Oxford...last week when we went to the horse races at Kempton Park the college provided us with "sack lunches" to take on the bus ride. In the sack lunches were sandwiches, fruit, water, and a small dessert. After the horse races a few people got sick with bad stomach pains and stomach flu symptons. One of the girls that was in Dublin had to stay in the hospital in Dublin until today because of her illness. They just determined that it was food posioning from the sandwiches! About 5 or 6 people have become really sick with this...and they just determined that it is E Coli! Also, it is contagious! So everyday after classes, before meals, etc. the student assistants are standing outside the doors with bottles of hand sanitizer! The program director fired the company that made our sack lunches and got reimbursed for all the money from the meals also. That is settled! Hopefully no other students will become sick with this!
Well, that is all that is new here. Tomorrow I am going punting...which is kinda like canoeing, but you use a long stick. This weekend is our last weekend here! We are going to do some shopping around Oxford and walk around the city a lot. Also, it is time to start studying for the big exams!
Joni, Corey, Morgan and I are all in the process of trying to organize our photos before our return home! We figure that we will have slightly more free time here at Oxford than we will at home. Once we get home we will be so busy with unpacking, laundry, moving back, sorority recruitment, school starting, and getting everything organized! Woah!
Okay, that is all now. I can't believe how fast all this time has gone! I am a little nervous for packing my luggage to go home...it will be so heavy! Hopefully it will all fit! :)
Love you and miss you! See you SOON!
