Hello to everyone!
Today is Friday, July 27. I just got done with class for the day and now I'm doing a little internet time. Everyone was hungover in class today so I am definately excited to take a nap after this! :)
Oxford is great! I am really enjoying the classes (but the economics gets boring sometimes) and the professors are very entertaining. It seems like they almost script their jokes...because the first professor, Dr. Holmes, will bring up funny things for us to ask Dr. Horsewood. Then Horsewood will bring up jokes about Homesy (that's what Horsewood calls him). They are always joking around about their "working class hero" lives, old Mercedes and BMWs, and the women in their lives. They both are single men around their 40s or 50s. We all know that they are not a "working class hero" type...I'm sure they get paid very well!
Anyways, let me update you on this week. Tuesday afternoon I finally finished unpacking and I put pictures up around my room to add a little fun! The bare walls are looking better! After dinner on Tuesday, Morgan and I started the laundry. Somehow we got roped into doing Corey's laundry too (he has never done his own!). The college provides us with laundry detergent and money cards for the washers and dryers. We had a bit of a problem with one of the loads...the door on the washer was locked and we couldn't get the clothes out! I ended up unplugging it from the wall then we ran the cycle again and it finally opened. I was a little worried I would never see those clothes again! Finally we finished all the laundry and went to bed. It is so nice to have clean clothes again!
Wednesday we had class and lunch...then a group of us went shopping for Oxford tshirts and sweatshirts. I bought a couple more long sleeved shirts. I think that my luggage will be over the 50 pound limit on the return flight home! After supper almost all the Nebraska students went to an outdoor performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Shakespeare. The play was performed on the greens of one of the colleges in Oxford. We took the wool blankets from our dorm rooms with us to stay warm during the show. The play was absolutely halirious! We loved it!
After the play everyone headed to the pub in Jesus College (every college at Oxford has their own pub in it!). Morgan and I shared a bottle of wine for 6 pounds (pretty cheap!). We hung out at the pub for awhile and then headed to the Purple Turtle pub/club/bar place. Very fun! Most of us were still in our Oxford hooded sweatshirts from the play but we still had fun! After the pub we decided to hit up McDonald's for some delicious drunk food. Turns out that the UK McDonalds have special menus for late night customers...they only make burgers, chicken nuggets and fish sandwiches. We ended up not getting anything. On the walk back to the college Morgan was doing a halarious impression of Dr. Horsewood and Dr. Holmes. SOOOO funny. We were all dying laughing.
Thursday morning we had the two classes and then headed to lunch. When we got to the dining hall we saw Joni sitting there eating! She had just returned from home!! Everyone was so excited to see her and now our group is whole again. I caught Joni up on all the "Oxford gossip" and she had a short orientation with the student assistants. In the afternoon we had another class. Dr. Horsewood couldn't make it to class on Friday because he is going to watch a cricket match, so we made the class time up on that afternoon.
After class I hurried and got ready for the group picture. Everyone was dressed up nicely in suits and dresses and we took a picture on the green at the college. We will get a copy of the picture the last week of class.
Dinner was served like usual...I am getting tired of eating on such a strict schedule. The food is good, but I think everyone would like a little more variety. Every meal we are served a dinner roll with butter and we allllwayyys have potatoes! I think we have had potatoes cooked in every possible way, except mashed. So, because of this, we are going to Pizza Hut today :)
After dinner last night I took a quick nap and then got ready for the night. All the Nebraska kids headed to The Goose, a pub in Oxford. It was a lot of fun! It is always fun to go out because every night you hang out with a different group of Nebraska students and get to hear about their travel stories and get to know them better. After The Goose we went to a club/pub (sorry I don't remember the name). Lots of dancing...the DJ played The Star Spangled Banner (they shoulda played God Bless the USA, right Tim and Adria???) so everyone shouted the lyrics! The drink special for the night was 2 martinis for 7 pounds. Of course we took advantage of that, so we had a few too many martoooonis last night :) We had cosmos Grandma!
We ended the night by stopping at the kebab stand. Now the kebabs in the UK are not like kebabs at home. Actually nothing like them at all. Kebabs here are more like a pita type thing. It is pita bread opened up and filled with tons of meat and veggies. I don't think they are very good, but drunk people just love them. I got an order of chips (french fries) and they were delicious :) The kebab stand is just a white trailer type thing....kinda like the vendors at the Fillmore County Fair.
This morning we were all feeling the effects from last night. I'm so glad that we only had to sit through one class! A group of us are meeting at 1:00 to go to Pizza Hut. We heard that they have a buffet, so hopefully it will be like Valentino's! Mmm!
What else is new at home? Write me messages! :)
Today is kinda going to be a lazy day...not much planned. Tomorrow the Nebraska group leaves at 9:00 am to go to London. We are going to Chicago the musical at 3 pm...so we have the morning to do whatever we would like in London. We might see some more sights since we missed out on stuff last week. Should be a fun trip!
Keep reading Corey and Morgan's blogs...I think that we have different ways of telling all the stories! I'm off to nap! Bye!
