Monday 18th December
Had a wonder around St Kilda. It's really nice, a bit like Brighton. And it's famous for it's cake shops! So had one of those then went to the beach which was nice as we hadn't sunbathed on the beach since Queensland! It was ok but not as nice as some of the other beaches we've seen. Europe's never gonna compare to some of these beaches we've seen now! We stayed these for a couple of hours but it was a bit windy. Then got ready for Neighbours night at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow. Found ourselves a quiz team - Starstruck. Well hardly but it was fun when we met Harold Bishop! We had heard he was a dirty old perv but he was really nice! The place was packed so we only got to meet the stars for about a minute as everyone needed a turn. Harold liked Kat's necklace. Had a pic taken then went back to the quiz. 5 mins later Toadie came round. I asked him if he has a hairy bum. He said he waxes but thanks for the interest in his anal hygiene. I liked that answer! After finally attempting some of the quiz questions which nobody seemed to be paying much attention to, Lynn Scully came round looking like a lesbian in her checked shirt. She looked scary! Didn't really have anything to say but had a pic anyway! Once the stars had left it turned into a cheesy nightclub. We danced the night away with 3 girls who were staying at our hostel and who will also be on the Kiwi Experience with us in NZ. The worst snorer ever was in our room, Rodrie (or Ronread or Rodroy, I really could not remember that name!). This was the 2nd snorer in a row in the bed underneath mine. He had a girl in his bed and I was wondering how she could sleep but in the morning I found out she was snoring too. Kat thought it was me!
Tuesday 19th December
We woke up a bit blurry eyed but more annoyed at the lack of sleep due to Ronread and his friend! Mark told them how bad they had been and we went on about it for a while. I love the dorm banter you get in some places! Then Jahid, Mr LA gangster, the only one of 3 brothers not to end up in jail started having a moan about it. It was hilarious! Jahid may well be a famous film director one day. I played a new game with him called name the famous person. I named them, he said whether he'd met them or not. 9 times out of 10 he had! Everyone stayed in bed for ages, mainly because the pretty German couple hogged the bathroom for a good 2 hours every morning! We were pretty happy when Ronroy checked out. He was a nice guy, he also lives in Birmingham, but one night of snoring was enough. Finally we decided to do something and went to the beach and then for a cake with Mark. He's worked as a chef in England so he said he'd cook kangaroo steaks for us, we'd been wanting to eat it for ages! When we got back to the hostel I played him at chess. I think I won, he said it was stale mate and I didn't but I still say I won. 3 in a row now, wahoo! Then it was time to cook. Mark did an amazing job with the kangaroo. He fried it in a sauce and did sauteed potatoes, fried veg and salad to go with it. It was delicious. And did you know kangaroo meat is 97% fat free? Now you do! Don't think we are bad people. There are too many kangaroos in New South Wales so they kill them off. It wasn't our fault! I took a lot of pics of the dinner, which made everyone else in the kitchen even more jealous! Then Barney turned shortly followed by Jaime. We were hoping to meet Chris Crichton who we met at Mission Beach too but he couldn't make it. It was trivia night in the bar and I named our team 'Kangaroo Mark' in honour of our chef. Luckily he's one of those brainy people who knows everything so we were glad to have him on our team. Although I think Jahid was more useful as there were lots of America related questions! After several jugs of beer we weren't so sure what was happening with the quiz. I went up to the front to take part in a challenge to try to win us some bonus points. I had to walk backwards with a lighter between my bum cheeks and drop it into a glass. I didn't get it in but noone did. It's the taking part that counts! Roddy went up to do the fake an orgasm round but wimped out. Shame it wasn't a snoring competition! He apologised profusely about the snoring again. We didn't care, we were rid of him now! We left when the bar shut and went to a bar called the Vineyard! Kat went back to the hostel with Mark. I had a row with Barney which ended up in me chasing him down the street! But we made up! I stayed out with the lads and Roy, Jahid's crazy mate from New York. Then walked back with Jahid. Jaime sent Kat a text cos he was worried about me 'walking off with the big black fella'!
Wednesday 20th December
Last night 2 new lads checked into our room, Mark and Alex. Mark was in the famous bed. And what would you know, the first thing we heard that morning was him snoring. It was not the room to sleep in! We got picked up at 12.30 to go on the Phillip Island tour to see the famous penguins, and really weren't in the mood. So hungover! The first stop was a winery where we got to sample 6 different types of wine. Kat couldn't face it but I knocked them back with a guy called Dave from our hostel. Hair of the dog and all! Then went to a wildlife park and saw 2 cute little baby wombats hugging each other, ahhh! And plenty of kangaroos, felt slightly guilty! Also some Tasmanian devils running around with huge bloody bones. They are one of the ugliest creatures we've ever seen. Then went to a really nice beach on Phillip Island, which was cold! And for pizza buffet, yum. Back to the island to look at more rocks, then for a cup of tea. As it was so cold we put our combats on over our shorts! Then it was penguin time. We spent some time in the visitors centre first. I tried to scare Kat and some other people with a toy snake. It didn't work. Then I made Dave have a fight with me with some toy penguins. I think he thought it was a bit weird but at least he did it! Afterwards we went outside to get a good seat for the penguins. It was so cold, we sat with our hoods up! At about 9pm the penguins started coming out of the sea and on to the beach in little lines and headed on to their burrows. We got a close up view of them when we walked back, they are tiny! Not what we were expecting. At one point they stopped everyone walking past cos a little penguin wanted to cross! Then it was a 2 hour journey back to St Kilda.
Thursday 21st December
Today we moved back to the city from St.Kilda. We checked out of Base and caught the tram back into the centre. We didn't know how to pay for the tram so we just jumped on thinking there'd be a conductor or something on board but there wasn't so we had a nice free tram ride! We checked into our new hostel - Connections, not as nice as Base, especially as 1 guy in the room had all his stuff all over the floor! We then walked up to Carlton Gardens and went to Melbourne Museum. We spent hours in there, was the best museum I'd been to in ages! They had the set from Neighbours of the original Robinsons kitchen and we saw Scott and Charlenes wedding cake inside the fridge! We also played some tunes on the federation bells and saw dinosaurs, spiders and all sorts of other insects! Emma got an education in reproduction and liked the naked models. After exhausting the museum we caught the free city circle tram - this one really was free and looped around all the main attractions. We got off at Federation Square and walked down to the Botanical Gardens to see the Shrine of Remembrance. It was closing by the time we got there so we didn't really get to read much about WWI. It was such a hot day, far to hot to be walking around town so we used the internet and went back to the hostel and rang home. Emma almost got attacked at the phone box by a kid with a bottle of vinegar, not a nice area!
Friday 22nd December
We packed our stuff ready to check out and headed down to the kitchen for our free breakfast. Was the poorest breakfast we'd seen, just a bit of cereal with powdered milk and rye bread! yuk! We checked out at 10am and put our stuff in storage as our bus to Sydney wasn't til 7pm. The weather was still hot but very windy and cloudy. It wasn't good enough to go up the tower so we wandered around town for a while. We did some shopping and got some cheap bits for New Zealand - fleeces etc! lol! We then walked down to Fed Sq and had our lunch. It started spitting so we walked up to Peter Pans to use the net and then went to Global Gossip to upload more pics to the website. After draining ourselves on the computers we grabbed a subway and headed back to the hostel to collect our stuff. We walked over to Spencer Street to the Firefly bus station - was crazy! Turns out there were 4 coaches all going to sydney at 7pm and two of those were double deckers! We eventually found out where we needed to be and got on board, we were only in row 2 so luckily had a pretty good view of the TV. We managed to sleep through most of the journey apart from the service stops at 11pm amd 3am. Was an ok journey though as we had prepared ourselves for the air-conditioning by taking jumpers and socks!
