Kat and Em's Travels
Sunday 19th November
We hadn't planned to come here at all, in fact we hadn't heard of the place but we found out that it was near to Australia Zoo so we thought we'd stay for a few days. The miserable woman from the hostel reluctantly picked us up from the bus stop and then we attempted to organise some accommodation for Brisbane. This proved to be quite difficult as we didn't realise that the Ashes coincided with our trip! Luckily we found a place for 2 nights and we decided to worry about the rest later. Then it was time for food shopping again. Whilst we were in town Kat texted Graham, our friend from Rainbow Beach to say thanks again for the lift up to the lighthouse. The next thing you know he is on the phone inviting us to have dinner with him and Martin and his wife and daughter! This was exciting stuff for 2 backpackers facing the prospect of yet another night of pasta and sauce. On the way back from town I randomly bought a new camera, it was about time and then we went to the beach for a bit. It was here that we were first asked 'Are you guys schoolies?' We didn't quite understand what a schoolie was but we learnt that it's a 17/18 year old Australian who has just finished school and depended upon the East Coast for their version of an 18-30s holiday. It wasn't so bad in Maroochy but it kept on getting worse over the next few weeks. Back in our room we made friends with Vikki and Hayley from Surrey who have done pretty much the exact same trip as us down the coast, even staying in the same hostels at the same time and we'd never met them before! That evening we arranged to meet Graham and co at the Sizzler, a big buffet restaurant. We had a really good laugh with them, Kathy (Graham's wife) and Leanne (daughter) were really fun. Leanne is a proper surfer chick with dreads. Graham hates them but I think they look really cool, i want some! We stayed in the restaurant for ages and were the last people to leave.
Monday 20th November
We got up early, made some lunch and went off to catch the bus to Australia Zoo. We fed an elephant, saw tigers and lots of animals shows. The zoo belongs to Steve Irwin's family so there were a lot of tributes to him around. We got off the bus at Mooloolaba, another little town near Maroochydore, to have a look around. Leanne manages a surf shop there so we wandered into the first one we saw and she was there! Weird. We chatted to her for a bit and then walked back. Spent the evening with Hayley and Vikki, cooked pasta and sauce and drank goon! We were chatting to an American guy who we keep on seeing down the coast as well with his girlfriend. Someone started telling us to keep the noise down before it even got to 10pm, we were not impressed! Ended up sitting outside with some Swedish guys whose car had broken down.
